16 Week Midwife Appointment

Hey!
I have my 16 week midwife appointment today (I'm 17 weeks tomorrow). I was just wondering if anyone can tell me if they listened to babies heartbeat at this stage? I haven't heard it yet and I'm desperate to! Unsure if it's still too early though.
Thank you!

Yes I had babys heart listened to for the first time at 16 weeks - midwife told me to record it for my husband!

boodles101 · 01/07/2019 08:10

It all depends on your trust. I did hear it at mine but some places in the country don't listen until after 24weeks! You can always just ask your midwife to try.

mynameiscalypso · 01/07/2019 08:11

Mine wouldn't at that stage; I think the first time was around 24 weeks.

xoxhayleyxox · 01/07/2019 08:13

Thanks for your replies ladies! I'll just have to wait and see then, fingers crossed I get to hear but if not I'll just have to be patient x

Mine didn't as she said it panics people if she can't pick it up.

Purplequalitystreet · 01/07/2019 08:17

Yes I did. Don't panic if it takes a while to find though. Baby is still very small and can hide!

GivenchyDahhling · 01/07/2019 08:18

I did - with the caveat that it might be too early. From what I’ve seen on here places really vary.

sweetsaltypopcorn · 01/07/2019 08:37

I did. I'd heard it already a week before, at a consultant appt.

HannahBee92 · 01/07/2019 08:54

I am also 17 weeks tomorrow! :D

I had my 16 week appointment last week in East Yorkshire, they didn't check the heartbeat. Think its at 24 weeks here.

Buddytheelf85 · 01/07/2019 09:06

Yes, they did at mine (although midwife stressed that I shouldn’t freak out if she couldn’t find it) but as PP have said i think it varies from trust to trust.

smartcarnotsosmartdriver · 01/07/2019 09:07

I'm in Scotland and they didn't listen in at nine.

duebaby2 · 01/07/2019 09:09

I would ask your midwife if you can listen to the heartbeat. She can only say yes or no. My midwife with my first said she wouldn't normally until 24 weeks but made sure I was going to be ok if she couldn't find it with the Doppler at my 16 week appointment, she found the heartbeat no issues 🤷🏼‍♀️

TillyTheTiger · 01/07/2019 09:10

My midwife did at my 16wk appointment, but only because I asked. She did warn me not to worry if she couldn't find it though, but it took her less than 2 seconds!

AndBeholdAWhiteHorse · 01/07/2019 09:22

I heard my baby's heartbeat at my 16 weeks appointment on Friday (was 17+5). It was lovely and the midwife was really kind and reassuring. I would ask her.

sugartitz · 01/07/2019 09:24

Mine in two different trusts have listened to it at 16 weeks

Mamabear12 · 01/07/2019 09:26

Mine did at 15 weeks. My 16 weeks appt was at 15 weeks. It took them a minute to find the heartbeat as she was still a bit low. But I was happy they tried.

McHelenz · 01/07/2019 09:33

My midwife booked my 16 week for 17 weeks because she said it gave her a better chance of hearing the heartbeat but she did say she couldn't promise.

iloveewanthedreamsheep · 01/07/2019 09:54

They don’t do this as standard in my trust. However my midwife did listen at my request and with my assurance that I wouldn’t freak out if she couldn’t find it!!

Angelinthenightx · 01/07/2019 09:54

24wks here, but im sure she would if u asked x

xoxhayleyxox · 01/07/2019 10:01

I've text my midwife asking and she said we'll give it a go! Thanks for the advice everyone x

my midwife offered to listen to baby's heartbeat, said it might take a while to find, after 20 minutes of trying she said she was sure everything was fine, could hear the placenta, hear movement, but only picked up the heartbeat for a second at a time, so phoned the hospital scanning department and told me to go straight there for an emergency scan....i was calm when leaving my midwife, due to her reassurances...a complete panicked mess by the time i got to the hospital...everything was fine, strong heartbeat, baby measuring fine and moving...i don't say this to scare you, just to prepare you...as i was so looking forward to hearing lo's heartbeat and it turned into a roller coaster of a day! i will add that i have an anterior placenta, so lo was just hiding behind that.

hope you get to hear the heartbeat without any drama x

VapeVamp12 · 01/07/2019 10:58

I heard it for first time at 16 week MW appt

Triskaidekaphilia · 01/07/2019 11:43

She didn't check it no, I had hoped to hear it but wasn't confident asking. The first time was whenever she first did the fundal height check (24 weeks I think?) though she seemed surprised that was the first time we'd heard it, even though we'd been seeing her throughout.

KatieKat88 · 01/07/2019 12:52

Mine doesn't at 16 weeks which gave me the excuse to get a private scan at that point and find out the sex early - actually quite glad it worked out that way!

Shelbybear · 01/07/2019 13:19

Mine didn't in my first pregnancy. It was 24wk appointment before they did. Sometimes it's difficult to find and they don't want to cause upset or worry for no reason.

I've got my appointment in a week I'll be coming up on 18 wks so hope they do try have a listen but I doubt it.
