Empty sac at 5 weeks 3 days.. is this normal?

Hi guys, went to EPU last week due to some pains that were one sided and due to medical history (pcos and endometriosis with treatment surgery) they wanted to scan me for Eptopic pregnancy.. the sonographer said she saw a fluid sac at the top of the uterus but nothing in it.. the doc has asked me to come back in 7 days for a repeat scan :( I’m so scared.. has anyone experienced this before? This is my second child

I'm not an expert but with my last pregnancy I had an early scan at what I thought was 6 weeks only to be told she could see "something" but I was not quite 6 weeks yet. I had to come back 9 days later where I saw little baby with a strong heartbeat :)

No experience myself, so hoping to bump this for you.

However i do know that If you are very early, then on the scan all they can really check and see is that the sac is in rhe right place, it is too early to see anything else. My friend is a nurse in epu and she said that they don't scan unless its a query ectopic before 6weeks as even a couple of days can change if you can see a fetal pole/heartbeat.

I would take a positive that you are not having an ectopic pregnancy, and the rescan you will be over 6 weeks so they will be hoping to see a fetal pole and heartbeat.

I had this, i thought i was 6 weeks exactly and scan showed empty sac went back a week later and was baby with heartbeat! 12 week scan date showed i was infact 6 weeks at that time so stay hopefull and Fingers crossed its the same outcome for you x

That's pretty normal from what I understand. My EPU generally won't scan anyone under 6 weeks because it's unlikely they'll be able to see much. I was there on Friday at 5+1. I'm having a scan tomorrow at 5+3 as the sister said because my HCG was so high something should be visible but I'm still half expecting to have to come back in a week or so.

Thanks so much everyone :) you have really helped calm my nerves! It’s such a scary time this first 12 weeks! It’s my second baby and didn’t have any pains with my first so was getting concerned! No bleeding though which the doc said is positive!

This is totally normal and happened to me. I went for an early scan but because I had only just come off the pill my ovulation dates were out and I was only 5 weeks they saw nothing but the sac. I too was extremely worried but I'm now 16 weeks and our little girl is growing exactly as she should be. I know how hard it is not to stress, I was a wreck but at 5 weeks seeing just the sac is totally normal.

I had an empty sac at 5 weeks due to a small bleed. Around 6 weeks I had a scan again and baby heartbeat was found. Hope all goes OK

Happened to me too, when I went back a week later there he was!
