Early scan or not?

I’ll be 5 weeks pregnant on Sunday, still at the early stages but have been thinking about getting an early scan.
No problems so far (I know it’s early) but is this something that most people do? Or should I wait to 12weeks? This is my first pregnancy and I’m really really nervous/anxious.

I was going to have one as I was really anxious but a doctor in my family advised me against it as they said it was possible they might not detect a heartbeat (they definitely wouldn't as early on as you are btw) and then that could cause more anxiety. They asked me how I would feel if they couldn't find a heartbeat and I had to wait a number of weeks more for the 12 week scan not knowing what was going on.

After thinking it all over, I decided that would be awful and didn't have it. I had the 12 week one yesterday and I have a healthy active baby inside me, it was a massive relief.

Do what you feel is right OP but perhaps do think about that? And definitely wait until at least 8 weeks or so as the heart won't be beating earlier than about 7.

I saw a HB from 5.2 weeks but I know that was early and doesn't always happen

@motherofcats81 @Lauren83 Yes I also saw a heartbeat at 5+3 at the EPU!! Everyone is different but its a low percentage that see a heart beat early! I wouldn't recommend paying for a scan till at least 8 weeks!!

I’m five weeks just now but would never go for a scan at this stage. I meant when I was 8-9 weeks! I’m going to think about it and just pray that everything goes ok. Thanks so much for your messages everyone they’ve given me so much to think about and made me so much more knowledgable xx

I had a scan at 7+2 and another at 10+3 when I started bleeding. It turned out that the baby had stopped growing at 7+3. I think they are good for reassurance re ectopic but can give a false sense of security. In my next pregnancy I held off until a panorama test at eleven weeks.

I agree with @HJWT in that although my early scan reassured me that there is something there, I am still keeping in mind that it doesn't mean there isn't still the chance that something could go wrong.

I just couldn't have waited 8 or 9 weeks from finding out until the 12 weeks scan. I am currently 10 weeks today and waiting for my 12 week scan appointment to come through, and I know I would be driven
Up the wall, waiting for the postman every day if I hadn't had the early scan. (But I do have anxiety anyway)

I had a scan at 9+3 best thing I did.i was so stressed before hand and the private clinic was booked weeks in advance.

I had a MMC day before my 12 week scan was the worst thing in the world to find out. I said I'd rather know now then get wait and go through that again.

I found having it st 9 weeks was nice then only 3 weeks until next scan.
