Weight gain / large baby

I’m 37 weeks with my second baby and have been having growth scans as the baby was measuring big at 34 weeks (I had a 34 wk scan to check low placenta had moved, which it has).

Growth scans are suggesting baby’s abdominal circumference is 99th centile and head circumference is 95th. Weight estimated as 8lbs 2oz at 36 weeks (although I’m fully aware these weight predictions are often quite wrong).

I’ve been tested for gestational diabetes which came back all clear.

My overall weight gain has been relatively low. I started off at 9 stone 4 lbs (BMI 23.8) and am now 10 stone 8lbs, which is about 8.2 kg.

I have two questions:
I know weight predictions from growth scans can be misleading but what about the measurements (I.e. AC / HC)? Are they usually accurate?

And has anyone else had a “big” baby despite not gaining that much themselves? I haven’t gained any weight for about 3 weeks but baby is definitely growing.

Thanks

Forgot to say, my midwife seems reasonably relaxed about it as I had a good vaginal delivery with DS (who’s head was 95th centile at 6 week check) but I am booked in to see a consultant after Easter.

DD was 9lb 7oz with head circumference over the 99.6th percentile. I had a scan the day I was induced and they estimated 10lbs, so not that far off. I ended up with an EMCS (genuinely lovely experience) but sounds like you'll probably be well able to deliver.

I gained about 2 stone overall, started with BMI about 26 I think. 1.5 stone gone by the time I left the hospital, last half stone gone a couple of weeks later and then regained as I increased Cadbury's profits during 6 months of sleep deprivation .

Thank you Mindy, glad you had a good experience.

I didn’t gain much with last one either, but then discovered a love for lattes and cake in the same throes of sleep deprivation and put more weight on in my maternity leave than I did in pregnancy Shock

This is my biggest concern atm I'm 5foot1, 8 stone 1 size 6/8 pre pregnancy, I'm currently 36 weeks and 9 stone 10, my belly is measuring 3 weeks ahead when I go to appointments but midwife isn't concerned because I'm following the line, no tests for GD and no growth scans offered. I'm petrified she's going to be huge and it's going to be too late to do anything about it until I can't push her out! X

Mine was 10lb 2oz (pretty much as predicted at 2 of my 3 growth scans) and I only gained about a stone over the pregnancy. I had a high bmi to start with though. HC and AC were predicted high too but I don’t know how accurate they were really, do they even get measured when the baby is born?

TotallyOrganisedMess · 15/04/2019 14:14

I'm interested to see what responses you get..
I'm currently 30 weeks pregnant and have only put on 3.5kg since my booking in appointment at 9 weeks.
My GD test came back clear but when my midwife measured me last week, baby was measuring slightly big. She said if it's still measuring big at my next appointment then she'll refer me for a growth scan.
I feel like my bump has grown so much over the last few weeks but my weight gain has been slow so I wonder if it's perhaps more fluid than baby, if that weighs less maybe?
I've been around a few pregnant women in the last week that are due around the same time as me and they all have tiny bumps, mine looks huge in comparison!

You could be talking about me too. 33 week scan estimated 6lb8oz, 95th centile. Also negative on GD twice. I'll be having a section anyway but also have extra fluid so thinking my waters may go early (prev 2 babies waters went early 37 weeks). I'm 35 weeks now. Interested to see how accurate these growth scans are once baby is born.

Thanks all. I’m hoping for a home birth too which makes me more nervous!!!

I just had a baby boy on Saturday night weighing 9.5 pounds so I guess you could say he was on the larger side! Absolutely nothing on the growth scans matched up as he was always on the 50th percentile and sometimes just under. And at my last scan at 38 weeks he was predicted to be 7.3 pounds.
And out of the 2 pregnancies I've had I put on the least weight with him. Even had people commenting on my small neat bump with him. Not sure where he was hiding. So in answer to your questions I don't think anything can predict a big baby so I wouldn't worry too much. 😊

Thank you @lizbiz89 and congratulations! Flowers
