Gall Stones During Pregnancy

Hi All

Bear with me as this is not only my first post, but my first pregnancy and i'm a little new to all of this. :)

I am currently 6 weeks pregnant and all seems to be ok at the moment. My question is this. I currently also have two other little friends in the way of gall stones and was wondering if anyone else has these and what sort of things to expect during pregnancy.
I dont' tend to get many flare ups any more as I tend to watch what I eat, but on the odd occasion they do rear their heads, I take a couple of Zapain and head to bed.
Do you know if I can still take these or if I should avoid them at all costs - my gut says not to take anything but the pain is so unbearable that Paracetamol just doesn't touch it.
I will be having a chat with my GP about all of this as my midwife wasn't 100% sure, but just wanted to see what everyone else does.
Thanks so much in advance all :)

I've had gall stones but not during pregnancy. I feel for you with the pain, the only thing that helped me was morphine!

Definitely speak to your GP but paracetamol is ok to take in pregnancy, not sure about a lot of others.

Although, when I had a procedure done at 14 weeks pregnant the nurse told me that morphine was on my pain relief if I needed it 🤷🏽‍♀️.

Congratulations on your pregnancy.

@whitetoblerone thanks so much. Yes, the pain is awful :( and usually lasts anywhere between 4 and 8 hours. Though by the 8 hours stage, i've usually exhausted myself and taken the pain relief so end up able to knock myself out ha.
I hope yours are ok now.
Thank you for the kind message xx

Not sure you would be able to now but contact a pharmacy..my local hospital pharmacy has a big pink book of what is OK for pregnant ladies. My midwife as a non prescriber was no use.

You can only take paracetamol when pregnant which is not great.

Redken24 · 16/03/2019 19:52

Zapain contains codeine so I don't think these would be OK

BKJ89 · 16/03/2019 20:26

@Redken24 I had a feeling that was the case being Codeine. Fabulous as it is, i'll have to put it in the drawer for the time being and be ultra careful until I can speak to a healthcare professional. The midwife I saw also wasn't sure about Naproxin either as I sometimes take that if the codeine is out...like you said, as a non prescriber, it's difficult for them to advise. I'll check with GP :) Thank you for the message though. xx

Naproxen probably out as well it's a NSAID isn't it?
If you can I would just phone a pharmacy lol as they have better knowledge, the midwife I spoke to didn't even know the pharmacy had a book for pregnancy drugs
Hope your pregnancy goes well xx

Non steroidals are out but, sometimes, a GP will prescribe cocodamol if paracetamol is not enough - but normally after the first trimester.

Definitely make an appointment to chat with your GP about contingency plans for in case you get gall stone pain while pregnant.

You can take codeine whilst pregnant, I'm currently on it for severe SPD, you just can't take it close to labour (within 6 hours of delivery I believe as could make baby drowsy).
And you can definitely take paracetamol, however Naproxen you should definitely avoid as it's an NSAID.
Have a chat with your Dr about it, but the BNF (a book of drugs with prescribing advice, all prescribers and medical professionals use this), says codeine is safe unless in delivery. Smile

Hello

I have gallstones and was taking codeine frequently before pregnancy as was get a flare up almost monthly! I was due to have surgery but then found out I was pregnant. I still went to my sirgeon hospital appt and they said they would only operate if it became life threatening. I asked him about all the recent flare ups and he actually said that it can go either way during pregnancy. Touch wood but I’m on week 23 and haven’t had any flare ups at all! So bit of a wait and see I’m afraid, hope you’re as lucky as I have been so far xx

whitetoblerone · 17/03/2019 14:23

@BKJ89 thankfully I had my gall bladder removed and have been absolutely fine! I got an infection in my bile duct and ended up with a week in hospital.

I'm sorry you have to go through the pain, especially during pregnancy! I hope the dr can give you something because you don't need that on top of everything!
