Baby Monitors

I need to buy a baby monitor and there just seem to be so many available I have no idea where to start - did any of you find a good site that you can see reviews or how did you decide which one to go for?

do you put the moniters in the cot/cotbed with baby so its close or do you put it on side next to the cot/cotbed?

We put ours on a shelf near the cot, if your stood arms outstretched touching cot, other had would touch the shelf. Most monitors, especially the digital ones, are pretty good at picking everything up from a distance.
