I'm just really worried by all of these results, even the PAPP-A seems really low and the odds just seem higher than what I'd like to see?? I'm getting really worked up here and no one seems to agree with me can someone please give some input

You have a very, very low chance of your baby having a chromosomal disorder.

Nowgimmeagin · 15/02/2019 12:47

I don't really understand the results but didn't want to read and run.
I know objectively that there is around a 0.15% chance of there being down syndrome and even less for patau. So very very small chance, is this a result of the ultrasound/blood tests? Can you speak to your midwife to put your mind at rest?

It just seems so high for someone in their early twenties and I don't understand it. Midwife said my PAPP-A was fine but then google tells me that's a really low result. I've tried to ring my midwife but no answer. I'm just so worried and I've got such a bad gut feeling

Hmm I’m not a doctor so have only googled myself.

Your risk of DS is very low and you PAPP A is also low, from what I’ve read low Papp A doesn’t mean DS it is just something that can be seen with DS. They calculate your risk based on lots of things and everything else is great. The low papp a can suggest baby May be smaller than average though and sometimes extra scans are needed.

maddiie3 · 15/02/2019 14:25

@Stinkytoe Thank you. Midwife has rang back and confirmed that yes my PAPP-A was low, it could mean Down syndrome or it could me a hundred other things or it could mean nothing. I just feel like I went into my appointment expecting it to be up in the tens of thousands, and not only was it nowhere near but I also have this low PAPP-A that could mean DS. DH doesn't want to waste money on harmony test as apparently the odds are so low, but I just feel so scared now.

Try not to worry. Low PAPP-A doesn’t necessarily mean Downs / Patau / Edwards. I had low PAPP-A but harmony test showed lowest possible risk for chromosomal disorders (and DS didn’t have any when he was born). Mine was caused by one slightly dodgy uterine artery meaning the blood flow wasn’t as good as it could be. They gave me some extra scans but growth etc was all fine. Hope all goes well!

The Down's risk is higher than you expected BECAUSE of the low PAP-A - remember they include everything in the algorithm to calculate you odds! All your other risk factors are in brilliant shape, so despite having the low Papp A your odds are still excellent- for every 685 pregnant women exactly like you only ONE will have a baby with Down's.
It's scary when things are not as you expect! And hard not to fixate in things when you are pregnant! Thanks
