5-6 week early scan tomorrow...

Hello,

MW has booked me in for an early scan tomorrow as LMP was actually a D&C for MMC so unsure of dates but also been cramping, spotting & feeling dizzy so she said lets check that out too.

Basing my dates from BBT charting I reckon I will only be 5 and half weeks tomorrow. I won't see much will I, maybe a fetal pole if I am lucky but likely just the sac & yolk? Just wondering what everyone, who has had a scan at around this time, did manage to see and was it then a successful pregnancy?

I am, understandably, very anxious

Hello @TwittleBee

I had an early scan last Tuesday. I've never had one before as Ive always been lucky and fortunate enough to get to 12 weeks with no problems. I worryingly had a bleed though that's the reason for my early scan.

I thought I was 6+3 however the sonographer said I was more likely to be 5-6 weeks. All they could see was a gestation sac (measuring 5-6 weeks) in the correct place. A yolk sac was noted and sadly, that's all that was visible. She tried abdominally and internally and got the same results.

She did however assure me this is totally normal, and she sees it all of the time it's just a day makes so much difference with what you see in the early days. Thankfully, the bleed was also noted as being adjacent to the gestation sac which again, she brushed of as being quite common in early pregnancy.

I'd be lying if I said I came home and didn't google all the bad stories about only seeing a yolk sac at that stage as some people are fortunate enough to see a heartbeat at 5 weeks. However, my re scan is next Tuesday, two weeks later and im praying I can see the little bean with a heartbeat.

Touching wood that because all bleeding subsided apart from the one episode its something to hold on to. (And my boobs continue to give me absolute hell on the daily)

Good luck with your scan! I hope you see all the positive signs whether that be a beating heart or a correctly placed pregnancy for now. Let me know how it goes x

Thank you so much BeeYouTiful (brilliant username btw!) - sorry you had to have an early scan this time because of a bleed, really hope your next scan goes well (I know how long that 2 week wait till the follow up scan can be!)

I shall have to remember to go in just expecting the sac and yolk. Just hard isnt it when you read about people seeing a heartbeat that early!

Yes, sorry I don't think you'll see much at all at that stage. If it's any reassurance though, a friend had a scan around 5.5 weeks and there was a blob, no heartbeat, nothing "reassuring". She is now heavily pregnant so all was fine, it was just too early.

Maybe for peace of mind, have another at 7 or 8 weeks? You should be able to see the heartbeat then and your risk of miscarriage will reduce massively.

I have a private scan booked in for 7-8 weeks (based on BBT charting) as I knew as soon as I saw that BFP I would need reassurance, just didn't think I would be eligible for an NHS one otherwise probably wouldnt have paid out for one!

I should imagine I will have a follow up scan 2 weeks after the scan tomorrow if they cannot see anything but the sac & yolk? That is what happened last time for me.

Hi sweetheart, I had an early scan at around 5 wks (suspected ectopic pregnancy) and all we could see was a blob! All turned out well. Good luck!

I thought i would update this thread...

Scan went well yesterday, dated me at 5+5, no bleeding found. My bean has implanted nice and high up. The internal scan actually revealed a lovely sac, yolk and we saw what looked like the most smallest flicker of a heartbeat too!

ah wonderful news!

Lamaitresse · 23/01/2019 09:54

Lovely!! You must be relieved 🤗
I had a scan at 5+4 with my dd (ICSI baby) and we saw & heard her heartbeat. She measured ahead the whole pregnancy, and has reached milestones ahead of time too. I think it’s great that you saw a heartbeat!
Good luck for the rest of your pregnancy!

TwittleBee · 23/01/2019 09:57

Thank you both!

Chintaria yeah I am taking the measuring ahead as a good sign as DS did, his dates kept jumping foward!
