2.5 stone weight gain by 32 weeks?!

Just weighed myself for the first time since my booking appointment and found I've gone 2 and a half stone since my booking appointment at 8 weeks! I'm now 31+5 and cannot BELIEVE I've gained that much weight!! My diet is generally OK but I did go on a bit of a food bender for the 3 weeks around Christmas. This is mad though. 2 and a half stone!

Doesn't help that I was already heavier than usual when i concieved as had started a desk job 6 months before. Was 10st2 at booking but always used to be around 9 stone.

I don't usually care about weight and am not too fussed about me - I know I can lose it again after baby is here but am worried about it having an effect on her somehow. I'm waiting for my GTT result back after a scarily high blood glucose reading so am already playing out scenarios where my weight gain has contributed to likely gestational diabetes.

Urgh. I've still got 8 weeks to go so am worried about gaining even more now. Did anyone else gain so much in their pregnancies and did things turn out OK? Is it better to try not to gain more in the last 8 weeks or just take it as it comes? I honestly don't know what's better for the baby at this point.

Snap I reckon I'm at a similar gain and I've 8 weeks to go I'm going to take the next 8 weeks as they come with a whatever will be will be attitude and then I reckon the beauty of having a March baby is you've got the summer to get out walking with the pram and walk some of the pounds off, plus I find it easier to eat light in the summer months as chicken salad is a tea where as in winter I want to eat pie mash and stodgy comfort foods.

@TheArtfulScreamer - it sounds like you have a really good outlook :) I don't know what possessed me to weigh myself out of the blue and I guess it's better to know, but I'm just so shocked it's so high. I honestly thought it would be maybe 1.5 stone?? Just wow.

That's what I gained by 34 weeks (which was also the end of my pregnancy so I can't say what would have happened between then and 40 weeks).

One stone dropped off immediately (presumably, baby, placenta, etc). Another half stone went in a couple of weeks after delivery (I assume this was excess fluid and the like). The last stone clung to me like glue while I was breastfeeding and was really hard to shift after that. The sugar cravings associated with sleep deprivation didn't help. I hit my pre-preg weight when she turned 2. So for me it was a stone and a half of pregnancy stuff that my body needed to gain and a stone of "proper" fat.

I went from 10 stone to 13.5 stone in my first two pregnancies, I don’t think I ate differently to how I ate pre-pregnancy, my body just seems to hold weight in pregnancy. I lost all the extra weight after the babies were born without doing anything in particular so I think it’s just one of those things for some women maybe?
I’m now 20 weeks with DC3 and have gained about 1 stone so far, I’m just trying to turn a blind eye to it and hope that I lose it all again afterwards like before!

@eurochick - it's reassuring to see how quickly lots of it comes off 😊 do you think the weight impacted your baby at all?

I gained around four stone during both pregnancies and lost them easily afterwards.
This seemed to about the same for all of my (generally) slim group of friends.

I know they say you only need to gain a little but my body seemed to go into a state of not letting go of a single calorie until the baby was born and weaned.

If I had gained 2.5 stone I would have been rather smug to be honest!

Good luck, please don't worry about this if all test results are fine.

All together I gained about 3 stone although I was underweight at my booking in appointment.
I was approximately 9st 3lb at the end of my pregnancy and after 2 weeks I was down to 8 stone. I think I was carrying ALOT of fluid and was send for the glucose test also, when that came back negative they tried to get me to do the prick test but luckily my waters broke the day after so I ending up not doing it but as I say, in the end the surgeon (ended in csection) mentioned how I was full of excess fluid. Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy OP and try not to worry about the weight. Plenty time to get rid once baby is here and summer comes ☺️

I'm in a similar position OP. I'm 33 weeks and have gained around 33lbs.
I was also slightly heavier than usual when I fell pregnant, and while my BMI was in the normal range, it was JUST in the normal range.

I'm now under consultant care due to the size of baby, but my GTT came back normal and all other factors (fluid, placenta etc) so far are normal. Just a bit baby....but obvious not a 33lb baby 😂.
I've really struggled though with Sickness in the first trimester, then SPD and so have not been anywhere near as active as normal. Plus I've never felt hunger like this in my life!!!
But. I just think so long as I make healthy options when I can, we will be ok ❤️

eurochick · 20/01/2019 22:04

I don't think it impacted her at all. I though it was a pretty normal amount to gain and I was a healthy weight when I got pg. No gestational diabetes or other health problems for me. (Just a failing placenta, which is why I only got to 34 weeks.). I felt well and was still doing lots of walking and some swimming right up to delivery. I'd had to stop more vigorous exercise due to first tri bleeds.
