Early pregnancy pain tips

So just joined as wanted advice from others mums or mums to be.

I'm in early pregnancy (6 weeks) and been having a lot of pain since just before I found out. The pains can come and go at all times and feel like period pains but stronger, varying in levels of intensity. Some pass in minutes and others take around 15-20 to go. Hot water bottles seem to help.
I had a scan at EPU on Saturday after local maternity told me to go A&E to check it wasn't ectopic and thank God it wasn't (am back tomorrow for another as the scan wouldn't register on the system last week) but I'm still getting the pain and morning sickness has kicked in too (nausea only so far).
I have seen a lot of posts about others having the same issues and being advised it's just the uterus stretching but I was wondering if anyone had any other tips on reducing or dealing with it or can tell me how long it roughly lasts?

TIA

Hey , just read your post , I’m new here too 6 weeks so very early ! I had pains like period pain and I was told it’s just your body changing and getting ready for baby ! You have been dr and all ok , I would just relax and if it gets worse go back .

Cherry2510 · 16/01/2019 18:04

I am in the same position as you ladies. Got my BFP today but spent the day in hospital also due to Sever cramping. HCG came back as 800. I have repeat bloods ok Friday to see if double. My consultant told me to try to relax, paracetamol is perfectly safe and to also try natural remedies xx

CatG85 · 17/01/2019 12:52

Thank you both, it's nice to know it's not just me.
I had the other scan this morning and all fine with a nice flickering "bean" so heartbeat being picked up already.
Much more relaxed now and pain actually seems to have eased the last couple of days, was just wondering initially if anyone had any other tips than hot water bottles and paracetamol but if it works, I'll stick to that :-)
Cherry2510 I hope all's fine with bloods Friday, sure it will be.

This happened to me. It was excruciating pain that would come and go. I went to the doctor and they told me it was just implantation and stuff. Luckily it passed after about 2 weeks.

pandechocolate · 17/01/2019 13:05

Hot water bottles, nice warm baths, and some teeth gritting. Paracetamol when it was really bad.

CatG85 · 17/01/2019 13:46

YoureAMeanOneMrGrinch oh bless you, mines been awful at times too. Once when it first started, just after I found out I was pregnant, I honestly felt like I was going to pass out but luckily it's not been quite that bad since. I'm hoping mine passes as quickly as that will be soon!!
Thanks pandechocolate, think that's what the plan needs to be :-)

I was just going to say definitely reccomend a nice warm bath, I'm now almost 29 weeks and you will find over the next 8 months there will be quite a few unexplained aches and pains but I find a warm bath helps relieve most of them and then feet up with a hot chocolate and water bottle for an hour. Hope your all feeling better soon

Cherry2510 · 17/01/2019 14:13

Do any of you ladies get cramping each time you go for a pee ? I’m finding that each time I go for a peek get cramping as soon as I finish the cramp comes to an end too, it makes me anxious to go toilet x

Springmummy19 · 17/01/2019 14:20

Usually cramps are quite normal as it is just growth pains. When I found out I was 7 weeks and right up until I was about 12 weeks, I would message my sister every day panicking about growth pains but they were never severe.

I'm 25+4 and I still get cramps (not to mention all sorts of other pains!) but they are manageable. It's just your uterus stretching as well as the rest of your body making room for baby, try the remedies suggested by PP to see if they help. Of course if they become unbearable or anything then contact your Dr.

Hopefully they are easier to manage. Good luck and congrats to you all on your pregnancies. Flowers

Thank you springmummy Smile

SauvingnonBlanketyBlanc · 17/01/2019 14:38

I had awful period like pains until 26 weeks.Horrific I really for for you

CatG85 · 17/01/2019 14:57

Yes I think I may pop over to my parents tonight or over the weekend as I only have a shower at home... boo!

Yes Cherry2510, a lot of my pain, especially during the night seems to coincide with needing to pee but does come at other times too.

Oh wow it could go on for a while then. Ah well, as long as I know it's not something to worry about it will all be worth it in the end.

I hope everyone else who is having pains feels better soon too x

Thanks. I just get so worried and anxious as I’ve had a lot of complications in my past. So under gyne, but trying to relax as much as possible. Was trying to hold of on taking paracetamol but caved in x

MummaGiles · 17/01/2019 15:48

I’m 9+3 and at 5/6 weeks I was just like you. The pain has gone now. Hot water bottles and, in dire straits, paracetamol. It won’t last much longer Smile

CatG85 · 17/01/2019 16:46

Yes I think it's all about relaxing and trusting docs advice Cherry2510.

Ohh MummaGiles you've given me more hope that the lessening pain is a sign of it completely going soon, thank you!

I'm in the same boat! Got my BFP on Monday, had cramping beginning last Saturday thought it was AF coming, still getting bad cramping every now and then throughout the week, glad I've read it's not just me!

littlemisscynical · 17/01/2019 17:01

Hi OP I was the exact same at the beginning of my pregnancy. It started even before I'd missed my period. The pain was unbearable at times. I had never heard of it happening during pregnancy before and I thought I had trapped wind. You'll be glad to hear it all passed pretty quickly for me. I can't remember what week exactly but definitely well before my 12 week scan.
Lots of warm baths seemed to help. Mine seemed to improve after a number two so maybe there was an element of trapped wind with my pain 🤷‍♀️

CatG85 · 18/01/2019 11:08

tired1245 mine was exactly the same, really didn't think I was pregnant as thought it was the pains ready for AF as were so similar but once I got my BFP (I did it 3 times as I still felt like they were period cramps! haha) they seemed to get worse. If it's any consolation, as a lot of other posters have said it would, it's easing a lot! I've actually had 2 decent nights sleep in a row which has been rare these last few weeks - I've never been so tired in my life! ha!

Hi littlemisscynical, same here. Started before so assumed it was just period cramps. I hadn't either so was really concerned at first but a lot more relaxed now I know all's normal and how it should be.
Mine get worse if I need to go 1 or 2 so must all just be pushing on the uterus or something, who knows! :-)

Hi all so I had my blood test today to make sure everything was going okay due to all the cramps it’s gone from 867 - 2147 😁
Im so happy due to having so many bad experiences. My cramps are still there but seem to be settling. Not sure how far gone I am so I have a scan on Wednesday

CatG85 · 18/01/2019 15:15

That's great news Cherry2510!!! You can relax a bit now. Cramps must be just what we've all been going through. Just keep those hot water bottles going.
Can you not work out roughly how far gone you are from 1st day of your last period?

Cherry2510 · 18/01/2019 15:49

CatG85 unfortunately have no idea as I don’t have a regular cycle. I had key hole surgery in September 2018 Addie to have terrible periods and paid. I was diagnosed with adenomyosis. So my cycle is out of sync. If I went if my cycle I would be around 10 / 11 weeks but I am certain I’m not that far gone. Certainly hoping for the cramps to go they scare me so much, i anxious going to the bathroom too ! X

CatG85 · 18/01/2019 16:15

Oh yes sorry you did say you'd had a gynae issues I forgot, sorry to hear that. I'll guess about 5/6 week, let us know :-)
Try to relax a bit, I found that when I was more anxious they were worse, probably from being tense. I know it's easier said than done though, honestly.

CatG85 I think in around that too. I’m tryibg to relax as best as possible. Is it possible to get sciatica this early on ?! I’ve hsd pin down my left leg the past few days. Feels like a nerve pain. I was thinking to use biofreeze gel but I don’t know if I’m allowed. Ladies any ideas?

CatG85 · 21/01/2019 10:07

I guess so. I've had sciatica in the past without being pregnant so it's possible any time. Definitely sounds like it.
No idea about biofreeze gel, best off asking midwife/gp. Does it have ibuprofen in it?

If I helps anyone, I had my midwife appointment Saturday and she said the pains are a very healthy sign and I finally got some well explained reasons as to why, she even used her hands as the pelvis to explain it better lol. The hormones are softening the pelvis ready to make room for the baby and this can happen quite quickly and painfully, especially if it's the 1st pregnancy so it goes from being a trunk like support to flattening a bit. She said you can get a bit of pain again in the last trimester when it starts moving again back to where it originally was to allow childbirth.

CatG85 I spoke to the doctors today abit what I thought was nerve pain. They told me it’s likely to be a flare up of my hyper mobility syndrome. Due to my body stretching to make room for baby and all the hormone changes. My cramps seem to have really settled, some days I don’t feel pregnant Shock but then I get my joint pain and that reminds me Grin. I’ve got a bunk already am starting to think it could be twins !
