Anyone had a stretch and sweep before

I’m due to have a stretch and sweep tomorrow and I’ve never had one before. My midwife did go through it with me but wondering what everyone’s experiences are. Does it hurt? Did it help?

No it didn’t hurt - just felt weird - and I went into labour 6 hours later, so yes I guess it worked!

NoChocolateThanks · 28/11/2018 12:24

It didn't hurt at all,it was just like an examination. In my case it didn't start anything straight away (or I thought).Baby arrived 3 days later, within 2 hours.

SB2017 · 28/11/2018 12:28

Ok that’s positive then that it’s just uncomfortable... bit like a smear test? If it helps labour get started before my booked induction next week that would be wonderful!

I found it less uncomfortable than a smear.

TheCag · 28/11/2018 13:33

Bit uncomfortable but not painful. It’s very quick. I gave birth to both my dc after successful sweeps, good luck!

SB2017 · 28/11/2018 13:50

I hope it’s successful, I got a bit teary with my midwife this morning as I’m getting quite uncomfortable and my last pregnancy was quite traumatic and my son was early so this time round it’s so different!

It's different for everyone, I found it painful and intrusive and decided I would decline sweeps if offered again. No idea if it helped as I was being induced that day anyway.

Don't want to worry you, just to say if you find it painful that's normal too, and you can ask them to stop at any time.

Sexnotgender · 28/11/2018 15:06

How far along are you? Is there a clinical need for a sweep?

aetw · 28/11/2018 15:40

I just found it uncomfortable but I think I was tensing. Remember to relax and breath. X

LeslieYep · 28/11/2018 15:44

Same as tinymeteor. I relaxed as I have yearly smears and colposcopies so thought this would be no different.
One I had was fine, but one midwife was having a proper rummage and it made me feel a bit sick. It didn't even start anything off!
I'll be avoiding them this time.

MrsBartlettforthewin · 28/11/2018 16:05

The one I had on DS1 didn't hurt was just weird ( baby was born less then 12 hours later) I was a week over due. the one I had on DS2 hurt like a bitch was three days before my due date and baby wasn't born until 5 days later. Not sure how much either of them actually helped.

MaMisled · 28/11/2018 16:05

Didnt hurt at all. Went into labour 2 hrs later.

Smurfybubbles · 28/11/2018 16:06

I found it very uncomfortable and it did nothing to help me along. I felt sick and lightheaded afterwards as the midwife had a good rummage down there, think it depends on their technique!
If I ever decide to have a baby again I would refuse one. Definitely breath through it Grin

SB2017 · 28/11/2018 16:23

Very mixed results it seems. I’m not expecting to go into labour straight away but when you are a week overdue you do get a bit desperate! I will have it tomorrow and then if Ed too uncomfortable I don’t have to have it again on the Saturday

Agree with previous posters. It doesnt hurt, just feels weird. You'll be fine.

SoyDora · 28/11/2018 16:28

I also found it painful and intrusive, and I’m fine with smears/internal examinations etc. And it didn’t work.
I declined one with DC2 and will be with this baby too.

ThatOneHurt · 28/11/2018 18:50

I've had 4 in total.

Yes it can hurt, and sometimes not at all.

It depends on the woman, the cervix and the person doing the sweep.

ThatOneHurt · 28/11/2018 18:51

Agree with previous posters. It doesnt hurt

What you mean is, your sweep didn't hurt you.

Didsomeonesaybunny · 28/11/2018 18:54

The first one I had was painless and it didn’t work. The second one I had was uncomfortable but it worked and little girl came 8 hours later.

You’ll be fine OP and good luck!

SB2017 · 29/11/2018 09:36

So ladies, I had my stretch and sweep this morning. Midwife wasn’t able to do it fully as my cervix was quite high. She said she has manipulated it as much as possible and I’m booked it in for another sweep on Saturday and possibly Monday. Induction booked in for Tuesday
