Brown old blood @ 6 weeks

Hi Guys,
First pregnancy and I'm having a hard time knowing what is normal or not. Im about 6 and a half weeks. I've had cramping for weeks but seemed normal. This morning I've had the lightest pink tinge to my wee when I wipe. This evening I had stringy brown blood; like old blood when you're starting a period so not too much - not enough to be on my underwear. Alot of places say it's totally normal so I'm not sure? My area doesn't have an early pregnancy unit so I have to go to a and e to get referred. I'd rather not if it seems to be a normal thing at this time? Thank you for your help x

@Kat567 it could be very normal but also it could be something worth checking out. Can your GP refer you? I went to my GP and she referred me straight away to my EPU. I note you say you don't have one but maybe the maternity unit at your hospital will be able to run blood tests and/or a scan.

Ohyesiam · 08/11/2018 18:32

I had exactly that and they called it an implantation beeed. All was well .

SylvanianFrenemies · 08/11/2018 18:35

This happened in my first pregnancy.
I went to A and E. They did a pregnancy test and checked with EPU, who didn't want to scan me at 6 weeks.
All was well, I had a healthy baby (now 7yo!).

You shouldn’t really have implantation bleeding at 6.5 weeks? That said it’s very very common to have a bit of spotting and brown blood is good. Could you go private for an early scan? I had one at 6 weeks, £70 and found a heartbeat. So reassuring

Newbie21 · 08/11/2018 18:52

Alternatively the maternity unit or EPU will check your HCG levels over a 48hour period which will give them an indication that the pregnancy is progressing as it should. They will give you 2 blood tests 48hours apart.

Thanks all for your messages. Unfortunately I'm in no situation to go to my docs or AnE to be referred until Saturday afternoon annoyingly. It just concerned me that it looks like the start of a period. Little bit on my knickers now which really worried me. It's just the worst timing for this to happen now so I'm stressed 🙈

It could be nothing, and I don’t want to worry you, but that’s how my miscarriage started.

I would definitely ask for the hcg blood tests that Newbie21 is talking about. They can do them at the GP surgery if you book an appointment in with the nurse and you get the results either the same day (if done in the morning) or next day.

Good luck

Hi, I had bleeding at 5-6 weeks ish which sounds similar to yours. I was referred to EPU by my GP to be scanned the next day. I was told it was likely to be implantation bleeding as no other cause was found. Maybe see if the GP could make the referral to EPU after a telephone consultation if your practice offers this (mine does) or maybe check online to see if your local EPU accepts self referrals. Good luck OP

I had exactly this and fortunately it coincided with my early scan and subsequently booking in appt as I'm IVF, the midwife explained it as implantation bleeding when the placenta starts to root in as opposed to implantation bleeding when the embryo beds in which is in the early days. I'm now nearly 22 weeks and carrying a healthy and wiggly baby.

Hey guys; thank you so much for all your help!! I ended up having to go to A and E and was there for 7 hours altogether!! Saw the Dr, then gynae, then finally got referred to EPU after 6 hours! All was ok! Suspected ectopic but ended up having an internal scan and saw the little blob with the heartbeat 😄 No explanation for the bleeding; they were not sure. I do have a cyst thing that's apparently normal on my left ovary; which could be the pain. So happy it all worked out! Thanks guys! X

I had a bit of brown spotting at 8 + 5, only happened once. Got checked by EPU and all was fine. See how it goes, if it continues definitely get checked xx

SSRainbow · 10/11/2018 15:56

Ah so happy for you! I’m 12 weeks today and had exactly this bleeding at 7 weeks, again at 10 and yesterday x

AuchAyeTheNo · 10/11/2018 15:57

Any bleeding at all during pregnancy should always be checked. Try not to worry too much though as it is very common. I had bleeding upto 16 weeks and my DS is perfectly fine
