Weight gain during pregnancy

I am starting out at 8.6 stone and just wondered how much weight someone around the same starting weight as myself gained by the time baby was due?
What did you eat and how much exercise did you do?
I'm eating healthy in the week but allowing myself treats on thew weekend - which I did before I got pregnant.
Also did you get stretch marks if you put on between the recommended 25 - 35 pounds?

I wish I started at 8 stone 6!
I’m heavier than you but I started at 10 stone 2 and I’m now 10 stone 10 at 31 weeks. I’m 5ft 5.5/6

With my first I gained 4 stone and I am absolutely covered in stretch marks - no new ones have appeared yet! But I did get them all right at the end last time

Stuckforthefourthtime · 18/09/2018 16:48

I started out about the same weight and have gained between 1 and 3 stones with each one. 4 babies, no stretch marks!

It's important not to focus too much on the weight though, especially if you are starting out slim. I'd let your body be your guide. If your BMI is underweight you'll also be expected to gain a bit extra. Keeping exercising is really helpful, even if you have to swap from CrossFit to Pilates after a bit! Congratulations Smile

Please don't get hung up on how much weigh you will/won't gain.
The guidelines say that 2stone is "healthy" but that is quite literally just a guideline. Every woman is different, they carry different, different size babies, levels of water etc.
Im now 32 weeks and have gained 2.5stone. Not one bit worried.
I eat healthy and I do a lot of walking in my job.
Enjoy the pregnancy and don't get yourself hung up on weight gain x

Sorry, I'm all in kilos but I started off the same weight as you. I'm only 5 foot 1, which I think put me towards the top end of healthy BMI? I've put on 12kg, taking me to 69kg or 10 stone 8. I'm now 39 weeks and going in for a c-section on Friday, so unlikely to put on anymore though the number of chocolate digestives I just inhaled might have an effect I don't have any stretch marks but I think that's more luck of the draw. My legs and arms are a bit bigger but I'm mostly all bump - most of my pre-pregnancy clothes still fit me (or would if they had a bump hole!)
I've pretty much eaten the same as I always have, (generally fairly healthy, lots of cooking from scratch, but certainly not averse to chocolate and deserts!) although I was HUNGRY at 2-4 months and wanted a lot more pasta, carbs etc than usual. I don't do any specific exercise but do walk a lot and have a fairly active job.
I do think a lot of it is luck. I've had a really easy pregnancy so have been able to carry on pretty much as usual. I also think that not drinking has probably meant I've consumed less calories than I would usually, even with biscuit binges Grin

I put on 5 stone with my first pregnancy and had maybe a handful of stretch marks.

Lost 4 stone within a year and fell pregnant with DC2 and gained 2.5 stone but had lots of stretch marks and loose skin.

Every pregnancy is different listen to what your body tells you and try to go with the flow. Smile

Started at 8.2 and must have been close to 11st by the end, certainly over 10.7. I ate reasonably well in the middle but at the start needed carbs for sickness and towards the end just plain food due to heartburn that had me guzzling gaviscon and taking ranitidine.

From 20 weeks I went back to the gym once a week with a PT and did weights/mild cardio. I'd been doing this pre-pregnancy 3 x a week but high risk hence the break and cut back in sessions.

Had 2 DC now and no stretch marks thankfully despite putting on so much and back to 8.3 now DC2 is 3 months. The last half stone took the longest.

4 pregnancies. Started each at about 8st 2 or 3oz. Put on about 1 and a half stone with each one. I do have stretch marks. I didn't do any special exercise. Ate normally.

how much weight someone around the same starting weight as myself gained by the time baby was due?

You should be given a chart telling you how much weight you should put on. You will then be weighted and told you should put on x amount. You won't be weighted again.

Unless you are told not to put on any weight due to having a BMI nearly or over 30, just eat when you are hungry, don't eat for two and avoid eating junk as much as you can. There will be times when you are very hungry and you should just eat without worrying about it.

What did you eat and how much exercise did you do?
I ate when I was hungry and cut down on my high levels of exercise due to tiredness towards the end of the first trimester then to stop my self pushing myself too hard in the subsequent trimesters. If you currently exercise regularly check it is safe to continue doing that exercise in pregnancy by asking the instructors/coaches, if it is, you feel up for it and you won't push yourself too hard then continue. If it isn't safe to do, you don't feel up for it or you push yourself too hard find something else to do instead.

Also did you get stretch marks if you put on between the recommended 25 - 35 pounds?
Whether you get stretch marks or not has a lot to do with genetics. I didn't get any. There as my friend with a bump that was smaller than mine but children who weighed more got some with each pregnancy.

ShedDevon · 18/09/2018 17:32

I started 7.3 and now 9.6 - so I was ‘underweight’ to start with but normal for me

loveskaka · 18/09/2018 17:39

I was 7st before pregnancy and went up to 9st 11. I didn't get any stretch marks, I oiled myself every night, but I think if ur going to get them then u will no matter what. 2/3 stone is normal for ur weight x

beccii161016 · 18/09/2018 17:45

I was 9 and a half stone (I think) and I'm not sure how much weight I gained in terms of the bump but I actually weighed slightly less than pre-pregnancy when DS was out.

I'd had morning sickness for the first 13 weeks which probably contributed to that. In terms of eating or exercise, I didn't really change much. Obviously I didn't eat potentially harmful foods but I continued eating as I usually would, balanced but not what I'd call healthy. Exercise was just my walk to and from work which was only around 30 mins in total.

In terms of stretch marks, there's nothing you can do to prevent them in terms of controlling your diet etc. That's not to say you should have a balanced diet though obviously. They occur when the skin stretches which it will do whether you put on just bump weight or far as well. I have some either side but they're not too severe, never bothered me though. You've no way of knowing how much water you'll carry, how big baby or bump will be and that is what will ultimately cause stretch marks. The only thing you can do is moisturise but that's not guaranteed to work either. As I say though I've never been bothered about mine, they're worth it 100% Smile

Haireverywhere · 18/09/2018 17:50

I've got loads of stretchmarks despite oiling up every time and years ago I used to feel crap about it, like I failed compared to people who didn't get any. Thankfully I don't feel that way anymore. Just to say that there's not necessarily a lot you can do OP.

Gemsie1984 · 18/09/2018 18:25

Put on three stone with my first.. lost half a stone then fell pregnant again 6 months later then gained 2.5 stone with my second and never really lost that much weight, my metabolism changed and I started gaining weight. Currently 28 weeks and I've lost 3stone since getting pregnant and only put on 5lbs so far. At 28 week scan baby weighed almost 3lb so don't think that's too bad. I have stretch marks.
