Folic acid overdose?!?

Hi - wondering if I took pregnacare or similar, should I stop taking my regular folic acid? Is it possible to overdose??

I've been taking folic acid for a year, since we decided to start trying.

I'm 9 weeks & although not sick, very queasy so can't eat much & so ridiculously tired I sometimes forget to eat, or leave it too late. Pretty sure I need more iron...

Thoughts?

My midwife told me it's not possible to overdose. If you have a healthy BMI the amount is pregnacare is enough but if it's high you will need to take extra.

If the new one contains the recommended amount of folic acid I would only take pregnacare.

As pp mentioned, I was also told by my midwife that is was impossible to overdose on folic acid as your body just disposes of surplus amounts through wee!

Why would you take them both though even if overdose isn't possible?

Pregnacare contains the reccomended dose of folic acid plus the others so you just take it instead of, unless you have been prescribed or advised to take a higher dose in which case I'd ask your doctor.

Folic acid is water soluble B vitamin so any excess you should pass out in your urine.

This is why the joke is made for those who indulge in taking high doses of B vitamins and vitamin C that they are producing expensive wee.

You can’t overdose on folic acid as above.

The nausea is just one of those fun pregnancy side effects I’m afraid! I had it until around 15 weeks x

BertieBotts · 13/09/2018 11:44

You can't overdose but it's pointless to take both.

Pregnacare seems to cause nausea in some people. Personally in pregnancy I prefer to take a folic acid supplement alone or one with iron. I think vit D is also recommended in the UK now. I think those pregnancy multivitamins are a con.

I’m taking a 5mg folic acid tablet every day as we are ttc dc2 and my BMI is high. I wasn’t given it until 12 weeks in my first pregnancy and didn’t know the higher dose was a thing at all. Gp prescribed for me and said It’s impossible to overdose on it. I’m not taking anything else

TheChatsPyjamas · 13/09/2018 11:53

You can’t overdose but they are wondering whether “too much” folic acid can cause tongue tie.

Smafa · 13/09/2018 17:34

Wow. Ok, thanks, all!
Maybe I'd better just get a separate iron supplement Hmm

Or just take the Pregnacare, which has both iron and folic acid in?
