Not really showing at 5 months

Hello
I bumped into an old friend today and she didn't know I was pregnant. When I told her I was nearly six months she just didn't believe me.
I am barely showing and you can't tell I'm pregnant unless I wear something tight.

This made me curious so I weight my self and I've only put on 5 pounds since I got pregnant.
I was weighed by my midwife and she didn't say anything was abnormal.
Should I be worrying about this and do I need to go to the doctors??
Thank you in advance.

Some women just carry differently to others, especially if it's your first. If you're very tall/long bodied, or if you're a larger size to begin with then the bump may not show as much. You could talk to your midwife at your next appointment and ask her to reassure you. Presumably she's measured your bump - if you were significantly under sized that would mean a referral on to a consultant I'm sure. Were your 20 week scan measurements ok?

eastcoastmum2014 · 05/09/2018 22:02

Really don't worry about it, all women carry differently depending on age, number of previous pregnancies, body type, muscle mass etc etc. As long as your bump is measuring ok to your midwife then don't worry x

Emmafh3 · 05/09/2018 22:02

Wouldn't worry at all. Some people are huge by 10weeks, others are nearly showing at 8months.
All bodies carry different, also depends on how baby is laying, if it's your first, your stomach muscles ect ect.
So long as baby is happy and healthy I wouldn't care about how small or large your bump is or particularly how much weight you put on.
I had a tiny bump with my first, and barely put on weight, fit into all regular clothes throughout preg and after (exception of leaving a button undone on jeans) this time feel huge and still put on barely any weight

newmummy0094 · 05/09/2018 22:03

The midwife hasn't measured me before I didn't know anyone was supposed to. Confused

How many weeks are you?

Honeybee79 · 05/09/2018 22:09

I am 21 wks and not showing. It was the same with my previous 2 pregnancies - think I showed by about 6.5 months. As long as baby measuring fine it's all OK, don't worry.

ParkheadParadise · 05/09/2018 22:14

I didn't find out I was pregnant with Dd2 until I was 5mths. Still in normal clothes and no symptoms.
Didn't really show until 7mths.

newmummy0094 · 05/09/2018 22:14

@AssassinatedBeauty
I'm 25 weeks pregnant.

Ah, right. She will probably do it from your next appointment onwards. If she had been worried about growth she would have said by now.

fruitpastille · 05/09/2018 22:16

I was the same/similar with all my pregnancies. They measure later on a think, with a tape measure. It's not very accurate. I got sent for a growth scan (which I think can also be not that accurate). Babies were normal weight.

Viola82 · 05/09/2018 22:19

your firsr measurement will be om 28w appointment. If it will be below the standard (I was 23cm) ask for measurement ultrasound. In 90% cases all is good and this is just the way you're carrying the baby (more inside than outside if that makes sense). Please dont worry!

PlatypusPie · 05/09/2018 22:23

I was looking at some old photos today of me expecting DD1 at about 6th months and you wouldn’t know I was pregnant, despite being very slender then - she was a bouncing 8lb at full term. My second, OTH, was obvious from very early on.

NonJeNeRegretteRien · 05/09/2018 22:26

Really don’t worry about this. A lot of people have their own stuff going on. I remember waddling down the street only to see the lady who does my eyebrows come towards me, we chatted and she said oh you better come in soon, I said I might not get in before the baby arrives (I must have been 38 weeks by then) she said oh god yeah you’re pregnant I forgot. Really, I was massive.

Some people barely put weight on (especially if you’ve had bad sickness).

Emma765 · 05/09/2018 22:29

I'm 28 weeks, put on no weight but my bump is massive. We're all different. Nothing to worry about.

Dal8257 · 05/09/2018 22:42

There’s no need to worry, everyone carries differently. I wasn’t really showing much either at 25w. I’ve always measured on track at my appointments though despite bump looking quite small, so definitely don’t worry.

newmummy0094 · 05/09/2018 22:49

Thank you everyone you've put my mind at rest.

I was showing early on with the first DS and was huge by six months but with DD 4th child my tutor didn't know I was pregnant and I only put on one pound the whole pregnancy. I had been a bit over weight before starting college. I lost a lot in the first year. Your midwife will be keeping an eye on you don't worry if you feel well. My friend was still wearing her jeans at six months.

butlerswharf · 05/09/2018 23:43

If it's your first I'd say it's normal. I didn't tell anyone at work I was pregnant until I was over 6 months pregnant. No one had a clue. I'm average size 10-12.

Second baby is a different story as your body remembers how to make a big old bump so it pops up a lot sooner.

Liz3891 · 05/09/2018 23:47

I wasn't showing at 20 weeks either. People I told were surprised that I was pregnant. I sort of popped out a few weeks later though and now I'm definitely looking pregnant (30 weeks)!

lennyisnuts · 05/09/2018 23:52

I didn't show until last week. Was still in normal clothes. All of a sudden I look very pregnant and I've had to invest in maternity jeans. I'm 25 weeks.
We all carry differently x

Kay1341 · 06/09/2018 08:14

I'm 21 weeks and it really depends on the time of day whether I look pregnant or not. Mornings I look pretty normal, but late afternoon and evenings the bump is more prominent. I've gained 3-4kg by now and although most of my normal jeans won't fit anymore, a lot of people haven't realised I'm pregnant until I've told them.

LucyLou19 · 06/09/2018 08:29

They don’t measure bump till 28 weeks plus,I’m 38 weeks tomorrow and have put on 11lbs in my full pregnancy I’m literally all baby! But my bump is measuring spot on 👌🏼

mommybear1 · 06/09/2018 08:32

I didn't show till six months really and even then bump was not big I only put on 7lbs during pregnancy. Make sure your midwife does measure you though - good luck
