9 weeks here and off work today so trying to be organised with finances.
I've done some research on essentials for when baby arrives (although I'm sure there will be many more things that pop up), and I've started looking just to price things up and really tempted to start buying - it's all very exciting!

I guess I'm just wondering when you started buying things and if you have any advice for me? Thanks Smile

After my 12 week scan. I’m now 20 weeks and have my pram/pushchair/car seat travel system, Moses basket and some bits of clothing. We got the travel system on offer in mothercare and the Moses basket in the Aldi event so have bought things when we’ve seen them on offer.

sachabloom · 05/09/2018 15:50

Thanks @Ceryss and congratulations!

I think I'll hold out for 12 weeks too. No harm in being organised once we've had the first ok I guess Smile

Bits and pieces from the 20 week scan.

I’m not usually very organised, but I looked up what items were going to be absolutely essential and bought stuff gradually each payday- so eg one month I’d buy a pack of vests and a cellular blanket and I’d record it on a spreadsheet so I knew what I had, sellotaped the receipt to the item and put it in the baby box in the spare room. It meant I wasn’t running around like a headless chicken at 38 weeks and I could pick stuff up in the sales throughout the year.

iLoveSpaDays · 05/09/2018 15:59

I can't remember exactly how long it was until I bought stuff, but I think I got odd bits of clothing before 12 weeks but I waited until my 12 week scan before buying big things such as nursery furniture, pushchair car seat etc. I found it very hard not going and buying lots of things straight away haha

BikeRunSki · 05/09/2018 16:01

6 months, although MiL started knitting at 4 months.

Azra12 · 05/09/2018 16:08

I’m 29 weeks and not bought anything yet
But probably because I’ve already got bits and bobs from last baby, so will only be top ups such as clothes, nappies etc

Icypop · 05/09/2018 16:13

I bought a couple of cute bits of clothes after my 12 week scan but didnt buy anything else until after my 20 week anatomy scan...my logic being if anything was wrong i didnt want to come home to a houseful of baby stuff. Im 38 weeks now and as it turns out have hardly bought anything as weve been given soo much from friends & family...id have been a bit gutted if id already bought everything & had to say no as most of the hand me downs are like new!!

witchy89 · 05/09/2018 16:15

We waited until we'd had our 12 week scan, and even then didn't rush into it. I'm 15 weeks today. I've only bought a few items of clothing, none of which would be considered 'essential', just thought they were cute. Bought lots of washable nappies too, because they were a good price. And also went and bought a second hand co sleeper yesterday, just because it was in great condition, good price and I guessed I'd probably not see another for a while. I'd like to get the travel system and car seat sorted soon too just because they'll cost a lot and I'd rather get them out the way. Then I think we'll wait until closer to the time to get all the essential bits.

Pittcuecothecookbook · 05/09/2018 16:21

I was about 24 weeks before I bought anything

bluemoonchances · 05/09/2018 16:36

After multiple miscarriages I wouldn't dare buy anything until at least 15 weeks, probably 20 weeks for big buys. Hopefully you won't have this issue and I know it's exciting... but just try and I'd hold back until after 12 if I were you .... doesn't mean you can't window shop though! Smile

wimbler · 05/09/2018 16:40

I'm 24 weeks and still not bought anything other than one outfit! It's more circumstance though as we are moving house and don't have a set date yet. We live in a 1 bed flat so have no space to store anything! We have picked out most of what we want and set up a "gift list" via john lewis (their nursery appointment service is really great btw). We can buy items off it whenever we want and it will all be delivered in one go when we have moved.

Charlottejade89 · 05/09/2018 17:01

Started buying bits of clothes after the 12 week scan, but didn't buy any of the big items til after 30 weeks

Harrypotterfan1604 · 05/09/2018 17:05

Bought a few bits after 12w scan but have been buying more since 20w scan. I’m 23 weeks now. We are being given lots of things from friends and family so until all that’s arrived we don’t really know what we need

Theseptemberissues · 05/09/2018 17:27

With dc1 nothing until 30 weeks, currently 26 weeks with DC2 and nothing yet!

SoyDora · 05/09/2018 18:12

Nothing until after the 20 week scan, and then only a few token bits until around 30 weeks when I started researching prams etc. Most things are next day delivery so I didn’t feel the need to buy early.

Currently 24 weeks with number 3 and have bought 2 hats and a sleepsuit! We don’t need much this time though bar a new cot mattress, as we have it all.

fiadhflower · 05/09/2018 18:46

Almost 25 weeks with our first baby and haven’t bought a single thing yet. Probably should get cracking really! I initially wanted to wait until we knew everything was okay with the 20-week scan. And since then it’s been really busy, so haven’t had a chance to start shopping.

ISeeTheLight · 05/09/2018 18:48

I was into 3rd trimester when I bought things. I have several friends who had very late losses though so I didn't want to 'jinx' anything.

Stuckforthefourthtime · 05/09/2018 20:06

Having lost two pregnancies between the 12 and 20 week scans i am more cautious - also I think buying later helps with the excitement (and counterbalances how tired/sore you can get later on) and stops pregnancy dragging on so much!

SoyDora · 05/09/2018 20:09

Yeah, I thought it was nice buying towards the end when I’d got to the ‘long hard slog’ phase to cheer me up!

Mhcb · 05/09/2018 20:18

I start buying after 20 week scan and now 25 weeks and just got the pram and moses basket sorted. Should be getting delivered tomorrow

applesauce1 · 05/09/2018 21:41

I'm 26 weeks and haven't a pushchair or car seat yet.
I do have a bedside crib, a cot and a mass of washable nappies which I found on fb market place for a bargain. I started buying at 24 weeks.
I'm waiting for Black Friday and Prime Day for the big stuff!

thismeansnothing · 05/09/2018 22:38

I bought a pack of 3 babygrows after 12 week scan and that's it. I'm 16+1 and feeling a bit twitchy about it and as irrational as it is I don't want to jinx it. Just want to get the 20 week scan out the way then I'll get a bit more organized

LeeCee · 06/09/2018 22:13

I'm 23 weeks and all I've bought so far is muslin cloths in the Aldi baby event 🙈😂 Have got a few bits (mostly clothes) as presents from friends and family. And have done a LOT of research on what pram, car seat, beside cot etc that I want but holding out on buying for another while. As PP mentioned I think it will be nice to buy in later weeks when being pregnant is getting old and I'm wishing the days away!!
