3D scan - worried about cleft lip

This is probably going to sound ridiculous but I am 32 weeks and had a 3D scan (non diagnostic) on Saturday. The sonography said his hand was in front of his face for most of it it but some of the pics worried me as they showed a dark area on the right of his lip and mouth. I can't tell whether this is a shadow, his face is just a bit squished or if it could be a cleft lip.

20 week scan showed no problems. Also had a scan at 29 weeks at antenatal assessment when I was in for reduced movements and nothing was mentioned. The sonographer didn't mention anything at this scan either but it was non diagnostic so don't know whether she would have or not.

I should probably trust the professionals here but can't help be a little bit worried. These are the best pictures that show his whole face. Some of the others showed quite a bad shadow in that area, but this shows most of his face so a better representation.

Any thoughts? Probably just being paranoid!

Looks just like my DS’ lips looked and he doesn’t have a cleft. I think cleft lip is often picked up on scan so if you could see it I’m sure an experienced sonographer could. I suspect it’s nothing but take it along to your midwife if you’re not sure.

It looks fine.

Very cute.

Seriously cute picture. A colleague of mine has recently had 3D scans, her baby has a diagnosed cleft lip and it's extremely visible in the pictures. You (and certainly the professionals) would be able to identify it if it was. I think this looks fine x

Thank you. Some of the other pictures do look worrying but they aren't a full face shot so probably not accurate. These ones are the ones that show the most.

I should really stop worrying!

There is definitely no cleft in that lip!

Darkstar4855 · 03/09/2018 16:58

This is why 3D scans aren’t used for clinical/diagnostic purposes - they are not that accurate! Cleft lip is checked for af the 20 week anomaly scan so if that was normal then you have nothing to worry about.

I can’t see anything that looks remotely like a cleft lip in those pictures.

GreenMeerkat · 03/09/2018 22:18

Thanks all.

It was mainly the other pictures (on a disk so don't have them on my phone to post) that caused me the most worry but I'm guessing those are the ones with his hand in front of his face as these ones seem fine.

Sorry for being ridiculous Hmm

He looks utterly beautiful OP

Those lips look completely intact :)

We use 4D later on in pregnancy on babies with a cleft lip to allow the parents to build a picture up of how heir baby will look when it’s born, however we use the black and white 2D for diagnosing a cleft, which is assessed on the anomaly scan.

Looks absolutely fine! My baby looked half gorilla in her 3D pictures! They certainly weren't this clear!
