Help - what should we call our ds!!!!

Ladies I would really appreciate your help in deciding what to call our ds due in October. My dh and I have very very different ideas on what is a good boys name but after much wrangling have come up with the following shortlist....

Patrick to be called Paddy - this started as a joke but has really grown on us. Just not entirely sure that Paddy isn't too much of a joke name...

Ben - we LOVE this but our surname starts with T making him BenT - not ideal!

Adam - good solid boys name but not really lighting my fires...

Matt - ditto Adam but also have a issue with door mat!

So your votes please -
Paddy
Ben
Adam or
Matt

And had also thought Adam wouldn't be shortened but not so keen on the shortened versions.....

How about William or Will?

scorpio1 · 04/06/2007 14:19

Addison?

i like Benedict

alicet · 04/06/2007 14:20

My cousins have a Willem and I think its too similar. Actually really like Will but dh hates it. Also like Euan (it has grown on me too!) but ditto for dh...

Good luck Rosetip with finding a name you like too!!!! I like Mattew or Luke best on your shortlist...

and intersesting what has been said on initials. we are ttc and already have a child with initial J, but want another J. is that abit wrong then?

dc we have now is Jamie, The new name is Jasper.

alicet · 04/06/2007 14:23

My aunt would ditto comments on initials - her son is John and husband Jeremy neither with middle names and post kept getting confused. I think you could get round it by having middle names with different initials though.

Addison not bad actually. Not one we've thought of but will run it by dh....

And I really liek Jamie too - but guess what? dh doesn't!!!!!!

my dp hated Jamie when i suggested it. 10 minutes post delivery he ouldnt argue with me and i had Jamie Levi

binker · 04/06/2007 14:25

Addison makes me think of Addison's disease

alicet · 04/06/2007 14:26

Ha ha ha!!!! Actually I am a doc with the predictable amount of medical friends so that might not be a great one for us!

Alicet- I also quite like Will but our surname is Rider. Do you think that Will Rider may have sexual connotations as he grows older or am I imagining things?

Scorpio- re the two Js thing. My friend has a Jacob and a Joseph aged 3 and 1 and she gets really fed up with people muddling them up the whole time. I have a James and there are lots of boys names beginning with J that I like but I have sort of ruled them out for this reason.

CantSleepWontSleep · 04/06/2007 15:02

Patrick. I know another MNer with a Paddy, and have never even considered that it might be a 'joke' name - why would you think this?

alicet · 04/06/2007 17:11

The reaction to a lot of people mostly of my parents generation is that they associate it with drunk irish navies and think of it as a bit of a joke. Apologies to any irish people reading this - I am merely relaying other peoples comments and this is not what I think!!!!!

More and more I really like it and don't care what they think!

love paddy.
my cousin was a ben t .lovely nursery paintings sent home with bent scrawled across top.

alicet · 04/06/2007 17:14

Actually given the reactions to it we have had surprised (and pleased) that so many people seem to like it! Now just need to convince dh!

Rosetip - know what you mean about Will Rider. Might not be a problem at all but if you worry about it its hard to think of anything else isn't it! Bit like us and Ben (BenT!) probably noone else will notice but if they did and picked on him because of it you'd probably feel a bit bad....

beckybrastraps · 04/06/2007 17:15

at joke name...

alicet · 04/06/2007 17:15

We know a Ben T too and his mum assures us it was never a problem.... Just tricky when you think of it isn't it?

jo25 · 04/06/2007 17:20

paddy, without doubt.

Budababe · 04/06/2007 17:25

Am Irish and have to say i am not keen on Paddy but could get used to it. Not sure of it on a baby though.

I have a Matthew as we liked Matt as well. DH thinks a Matty would be gay! Having said that there are lots of boys here in Hungary called Mattyi which is pronounced Moti.

I like Adam - nice strong name.

Like Ben too but you are right to consider the surname. DH's mother wanted to call him Andrew Richard and their surname begins with S so his initials would have been ARS!

Twiglett · 04/06/2007 17:35

have an irish DH .. Paddy just isn't right I'm afraid (and his dad was a Patrick)

Don't see the problem with Ben T to be honest, there will be a space and a capitalisation and the only time you'll get Ben T is if he's in a class with other Bens and only in primary (also Ben Tennyson is Ben-10 is current rave cartoon series / toys for small boys so would get much kudos from 6 year olds) ... Benedict Arnold though .. and Benny from crossroads

Love Adam .. it can be shortened to Ad or Ads

Matt is a nice name too .. met one on holiday once when I was 16 .. its not just door mat, but 'fancy a beer Mat?', 'that was a nice Welcome Mat' .. oh how they did make us snigger in our cider-drunken haze

alicet · 06/06/2007 13:43

Hey thanks everyone for your comments and suggestions! Still no further forward at deciding but will let you know!

saralou · 06/06/2007 16:14

i like adam out of your list the most..

my favourite boys name is owen.. wasn't to popular a couple of years back, i know a few now though!

LuckyMama · 06/06/2007 16:18

We had no problem deciding on a girls name but could never agree on a boys name! We decided on Oliver Jack or OJ (his nickname) the night before out big scan (when we found out we were having a boy) Good Luck on your decision!
