Have had a high triple test result and have amnio booked for Tuesday.

I am trying to console myself to look at it the other way so it doesn't look too bad.

I'm 37.

What were your triple test results?

Thanks all for your comments.

Coolmama- the same has happened to me in that the midwife arrived at the hosue and told me that an appointment has been made for an amnio for Tuesday so I feel quite pressured to have it done in that the amnio is the recomendation iyswim.

My friend is a special care nurse and said that she has known of cases where the scan was thorough and they didn't do the amnio but when i mentioned this to the midwife she said they didn't do this here and yet I know that my friend was talking about our local hospital

Hi Pixie! There is some research out there which suggests bad pregnancy sickness accounts for some of the false positives (due to high HCG as you say). I was hospitalised with hyperemesis with dd1, so that was the limk I made. Have to say I'm a bit about appointments being made 'for you' without consent - hardly the non-directive stance that is suppoised to drive antenatal screening!

Appointment for an amnio I should have said!

Pixie - the sonographer told me she was looking for soft markers and was checking the heart, blood flow from me to the baby, stomach, bladder, brain, all sorts. Really really thorough.

I do know however that our hospital has just joined up with Kings College London and they haven't long been doing nuchal scans either so perhaps they are taking full advantage of the new equipment???

Sorry to hear about your high result Pixiefish but if it is any consolation I'm in the same position. I got a 1 in 190 result from the NT and HCG and PAPP blood test last Tuesday. It was stressful but I've felt better after clarifying my thoughts. Here are the things my partner and I asked ourselves:

  1. How much do we want to avoid a Down's child?
  2. The affect on any other children, a Down's child will mean we could give less time to my family.
  3. How long did it take to get pg?
  4. How much will a mc upset us.
  5. What would we do if the result is a Down's baby. If the result is just for information then risking mc when the baby is likely to be ok means that amnio/CVS doesn't seem worth it.

Our thoughts are that a Down's child is for life, whereas we hope we would get over a mc after a few weeks. I got pg easily (although I'm 38) and wouldn't continue with a Down's pregnancy. I'm having a CVS next Wednesday.

I hope I haven't been too up-front, this is the first time I've posted.

Good luck with your decision, I'm hoping for some as well!

Thank you all.

Antelope- not too frank at all. I sway between the way you feel and not knowing if I could go through with a termination.

when i was waiting for my result i started as if it was downs i was going for a termination with it being number 7 and i had the others to worry about but by the time i had waited the 3 weeks i felt i could not go through with a termination, luckly it was all ok but i'm not sure what i would of done if i had to decide

CLEAR CLEAR CLEAR

PC whatever it is has come back clear for no foetal abnormalities in the first set of tests.

They rang me at 4.55 to tell me.

I am so relieved. Thank you ALL for your support and your kind words.

You kept me sane in what has been a hard week for me
