6 week scan - what to expect?

Hey all, I have a private scan on Friday. I'm unsure of my dates but it will be two weeks since my BFP and I think I'll be about 6+3.

I'm really nervous that I've wasted £79 and I'm going to come away from it more anxious than before if they can't find anything. Would love to hear other people's stories of early scans and how much you could see.

Not overly keen on the whole idea of having a probe stuck into me either....

I had a scan last week at 6+5 - it was by my midwife for reassurance after I had a previous MMC

We saw the heartbeat and midwife measured the baby as being the right size. I found it reassuring and am glad I had it. and the probe going inside was really not that bad - a tiny bit uncomfortable but not painful at all

Thanks for sharing your experience @olivecake

Not much. With mine at 6+6, with an external scan they could only see the sac but nothing else. When they then did it internally we could see a bean with a heartbeat. but it was small and blurry.

Mine was an NHS one for suspected ectopic. I wouldn't pay for a private one. It wasn't particularly reassuring!

I paid for a private scan at 6+3 - they did it externally and we spotted the flicker of the heartbeat quite quickly which really reassured us. Go prepped with a full bladder! One thing I didn't expect was the full screens to be on immediately - Id assumed the sonographer would have the first look then turn on the screen so it was a little nerve wracking trying to spot it immediately on a huge screen in front of us! Just explain to them you're nervous (they will expect you to be) the lady doing ours was lovely. Good luck

@chipsandcurrysaucemonster that's very helpful, thanks!

@Wellthisunexpected if I can see a heartbeat then I'll be very reassured. Let's hope mine goes as well as yours did 😁

@jeanzbeanz I'd heard too many bad stories to be reassured for long! But I can be a bit of a Debbie Downer!

I had an internal nhs scan at 5 weeks due to a burst cyst and they could see the sac but no heart beat. A week later there it was.

I say this because if you do have your dates wrong it may be a bit early to see anything.

I had one at 6+3 and say heartbeat etc, but was warned a lot by MW that it was still early days and not everyone sees heartbeat at that stage. I had one as conceived through IUI and clinic does an early scan to ensure pregnancy is in right place

Not much. I had a private scan during my last pregnancy at 6 weeks and one at the EPAU at 7+4. It really is just the tiniest blob imaginable with a little flicker. I found it reassuring but sadly still went on to have a MMC. Didn’t bother with any scans this time until the dating scan at 13+6 and he’s fine.

Thanks everyone for your kind messages. I had my scan today and saw a heartbeat which was amazing. Baby is measuring just under 6 weeks. So pleased!
