Periodontitis during pregnancy - help

Hello
I am 19 weeks pregnant and dentist has told me I have periodentitis and need a deep clean. She said think was pregnancy related. I left thinking that this was gum disease and I obviously need to get it treated for myself - have come home and googled however and found tonnes of articles linking this to pre term births and pre emclampsia and am now terrified. I had no idea it could affect the baby. Has anyone else had this during pregnancy and did you get any reassurance from your midwife? Shall I call them?

It's not uncommon in pregnancy. You might be better off seeing a good hygienist than a dentist (they are specialists in periodontitis) for the deep clean, plus it will be cheaper. Call the midwife if you are after reassurance of course, but like I said it's not uncommon and there are probably more significant things to worry about regarding how it will effect your baby, eg. Quitting smoking/ eating balanced diet/ maintaining healthy weight/ taking recommended supplements etc. Treatment will be lengthy though so it would prob be worth doing before you get a big bump making it uncomfortable to lie flat for 30mins plus. Thank you for your reply muststoplurking much appreciated! I've managed to it done today to put my mind at rest and hygienist said it was not too bad at all and not to worry. Phew! Onto the next pregnancy worry I'm sure I'll find something soon!
