Just that really...

When did you start picking bits up?

Any maternity buys?

Best thing you bought for newborn?

Anything you bought and never used?

A snoozeshade. They can nap on the go so you don't feel like you need to hang around the house. Gave me freedoms.
A sling. Because wearing them is just the easiest.
Reusable nappies. Not as much of a faff as you think.

A pashmina. Useful for covering up when feeding, a blanket for toddlers, eating a picnic on etc.

Don't buy any baby clothes with buttons up the back.

Lansinoh nipple cream if you're breastfeeding.

Cloth nappies are great.

A maternity pillow for later in pregnancy when the bump makes sleeping difficult.

Beco gemini sling.

If you are planning on breastfeeding make sure any new clothes you buy from now on are breastfeeding friendly (not necessarily specifically nursing clothes but easy to unbutton or pull up). I stupidly didn't do this so bought maternity clothes I then couldn't wear again post-birth and had to buy new stuff again.
Also get Amazon Prime if you don't have it already so it's easy to order stuff as and when you need it in the newborn days.

We bought a couple of bits up to 6 months of pregnancy but bought most things around 7-8 months.

Our best purchases were:

  • Ewan the dream sheep - helped us through the first two months with DS
  • Cot top changing table (not much room in nursery so this came in very handy
  • MAM bottles (if bottle feeding)
  • Leggings from Primark (for me post c-section)

We found we didn’t really use our nursery, other than for nappy changing, for the first few months so in some ways the rush to get it finished pre-birth wasn’t necessary as DS slept in our room in a Moses basket.

Don’t buy too many 0-3 baby clothes as this is the size people tend to buy as gifts.

Started buying around 20 wks and ordered pram around 28 wks.

The things I found essential were a proper changing table and a stretchy sling. Oh and the car seat.

Agree with PP- if you’re planning to breastfeed or try then choose easy access maternity tops (avoid high necks).

The things we didn’t need- the pram bassinet in the travel system (DD hated it after a couple of weeks, barely used). Moses basket- I couldn’t see DD sleeping properly so bought a Next 2 Me instead.

We had loads of white cuddly toys bought which DD isn’t interested in yet (4 months) but loves anything colourful that rattles and crinkles- Lamaze do a pretty good selection. However she didn’t play with anything until she was about a month old and then only the play mat really.
