Pregnacare vitamins linked to sickness?

RBM9 · 15/04/2018 15:55

It could be a total coincidence, but any days I have missed/forgotten to take my Pregnacare vitamins, I haven’t been sick. My DH thinks it is a coincidence but I’ve read posts where some women also agree?

I felt awful on pregnacare. Made my nausea much worse.

Try seven seas or boots own. Much gentler imo.

Or try taking them at bedtime - when I was using up the last of the pregnacare ones I took them at night and slept through the worst of the nausea.

I've heard this before too. I've never taken a multivitamin in pregnancy, just folic acid and never had bad sickness.

UrgentExitRequired · 15/04/2018 16:00

Pregnacare gave me constipation, so I stopped taking it.

RedRobin87 · 15/04/2018 16:04

I couldn't take them as they made me feel horrendously sick.

mindutopia · 15/04/2018 16:18

With my first (actually ttc), they gave me awful stomach pain and reflux (oddly not with my 2nd). But the iron especially doesn’t agree with everyone. You could always just take folic acid and vitamin d separately (which is the NHS recommendation anyway).

brownelephant · 15/04/2018 16:20

I had that as well.
switched to taking them with dinner

xLeanne128 · 15/04/2018 16:21

My friend swore they made her sick so went back just to folic acid. I'm currently taking them feel ok so far.... touch wood...

LisaSimpsonsbff · 15/04/2018 16:30

I am absolutely certain this is the case for me, as I started taking them while TTC, and found that I felt very nauseous for an hour or two after taking them - and that can't have been pregnancy! Like a pp, I switched to taking them at night and that seemed to stop the problem (which I think was actually taking them on an empty stomach, rather than morning vs. night)

Fishcakey · 15/04/2018 16:34

13 years ago they did it to me too. Blugh!

RBM9 · 15/04/2018 16:36

Ladies thank you so much for your comments. It definitely confirms how I’ve been feeling. I’m just at going to get the folic acid supplement and try that instead. Thank you!

They made me feel awful too!

Icklepickle101 · 15/04/2018 16:38

They made me feel horrendous (well on top the the hyperemesis) as did any of the combined pregnancy vitamins that were massive and tasted foul. I got on much better taking them separately

pastabest · 15/04/2018 16:43

It's definitely a thing my midwife agreed with me when I told her I was just taking vit d and folic acid for DC2 after taking them with DC1 made me feel ill. She said she hears it a lot.

I've come to the conclusion that in general pregnacare is an expensive waste of money, desgined to exploit anxiousness of the first trimester.

Oct18mummy · 15/04/2018 16:52

Same here would throw them up no matter if full stomach or not stopped taking them and switched to Wilkinson’s own brand

LisaSimpsonsbff · 15/04/2018 16:58

I found exactly the same thing with the Tesco own-brand ones, btw. I don't think it's a specific brand, as they all contain pretty similar stuff. I suspect it was either the folic acid itself or the iron that set me off on an empty stomach, as I've regularly taken a non-pregnancy multivitamin for years without that happening, and that's the big difference between pregnancy and normal ones (apart from the absence of vitamin A, which seems unlikely to be the problem)

sparkles212 · 15/04/2018 17:13

Has anyone had the nhs multivitamin given at the booking appointment? I've been taking them for 5 weeks and I've felt dogger. On the rare days I've forgotten to take one first thing in the morning and taken it at night when I'm home from work instead, I've felt better. This week I've therefore connected the dots and switched to taking them at night instead and its working. I know at 13 weeks I should be feeling better anyway (in theory) but I really think the multivitamins are part of the reason I've been so nauseous. After my scan next week I'm going back to vit D and maybe iron.

Bluebirdsky · 15/04/2018 17:19

My sickness was quite bad and there is no way that I could have faced even trying to swallow one of those tablets so took just folic acid during those weeks and sometimes couldn't even manage that
Once the sickness passed though I started taking the pregnacare again and I haven't had any problems with it. I take it in the evening just after my dinner.

Pinkvoid · 15/04/2018 19:37

Made mine worse too, have switched to Morrisons pregnancy vitamin now which is cheaper and doesn’t worsen the nausea so win win.

hannknitted · 16/04/2018 13:46

Didn't matter which brand I took they all made me feel sick - I just swapped to taking them just before bed so I then go straight to sleep and haven't had any problems with doing it that way. I'm 25 weeks now and still taking them - I just take whichever brand is on offer / available at the time so I've taken a few different ones, but even now if I occasionally forget and take it in the morning, it makes me feel sick!

Liz3891 · 16/04/2018 13:57

I've had no morning sickness at all but when I was taking the Seven Seas prenatal vitamins, I definitely felt a bit off. Not nauseous, just not quite well - stomach aches, etc. I switched to just folic acid + vitamin D and I've been absolutely fine since then.
