Fizzy/Sugary drinks during pregnancy

Hi everybody,

Basically I just wanted a bit of advise. Its nothing serious but I always feel guilty about it! I eat a pretty balanced diet during the week, lots of fresh meals with whole foods, veggies etc (of course not always perfect). Anyway...my guilty pleasure and treat (just as some others may have a desert or chocolate every night) is a fizzy drink (non caffeine) such as a can of fanta or a lucozade etc. I just love them while I watch a movie or do some work from home even though I know they are terrible and full of sugar D: I have about 5 bottles or cans a week as a evening treat.. will this cause me to have a huge unhealthy baby or get gestational diabetes? (Im currently 25 weeks) :/

Thanks!

Just a heads up some Lucozades contain caffiene! I didn't know until I checked xx

I was similar apart from I had a coke (full fat, sugar and caffeine) a few times a week. I started at the beginning as it helped headaches and got used to it. I didn't have any other caffeine and generally ate well. I had a gestational diabetes test due to family history of diabetes and my levels were normal.

If you're not going overboard I wouldn't worry.

ruleshelpcontrolthefun · 30/01/2018 22:02

I've had 3 cans of diet coke a day for the past 13 years. I've made 2 healthy babies in that time. I switched to caffeine free when pregnant with DC1 (DC2 I didn't bother).

I ate my weight in chips and chocolate when I was pregnant too. I usually eat really well but I couldn't keep anything other than junk down. Pastries, crisps, ice cream.....

I have 2 beautiful, healthy children. No one is overweight in our house.

No it won't. I basically lived in haribo and am a bit fat and DS was a normal size and perfectly healthy.

Natsku · 30/01/2018 22:04

All I could drink for a good chunk of this pregnancy was sweet fizzy drinks because of HG and according to all my scans baby seems perfectly normal size (bang on the 50th percentile when I had a scan at 38 weeks) and I don't have GD (though I did have one borderline measurement on my GTT but further testing put me in the clear)

mintich · 30/01/2018 22:08

I drank coke, no diabetes and a perfectly healthy baby! I had a lot of sickness and it was one thing I craved! The midwife said it was fine as long as it wasn't to excess

Abitnutty · 30/01/2018 22:15

My first dc. My craving was full fat coke.. I had a min 10 cans a day.. Altho then I was never told not to I remember MW laughing when I told her and she said it must make u windy pmsl.
. This time being a bit more wise but maybe a bit too complacent. I did still drink coke but diet.. Max two cans a day.. Not other caffeine drinks and min choc.. For the first 25 weeks.
But I'm ashamed to say I've slipped.. I've been struggling with stress non pregnancy related.. And it's my vice. Prob up to 6 cans a day :(
I'm trying to drink less but as I say stress = crack open a can for me.. But still no tea coffee etc..

Full on Pepsi max drinker here and I eat healthy too but need fizzy juice to settle gas.
Think Pepsi was originally for sickness anyway.

Eat drink and play how you want just don't read into everything or you will be bored silly, dehydrated and starving.

TeddyIsaHe · 30/01/2018 23:45

For four months all I ate or drank was full fat lemonade and chip shop battered sausages 😂 Dd is perfect!

You will go mad if you don’t give into cravings, which I’m sure is infinitely worse than a Fanta.

FloralSocks · 31/01/2018 09:26

Gestational diabetes is a hormonal condition caused by the placenta, it is NOT caused by diet. If you have it, it can be controlled by diet if it’s a mild case.

You can’t develop it by eating sugar, that is Type 2 diabetes.

It sounds like you’re doing really well with eating a balanced diet and I wouldn’t worry. Take care!

mindutopia · 31/01/2018 10:35

Everything in moderation is fine. You could always switch to sugar free or make up your own with juice or squash and sparkling water.

Lulu2106 · 31/01/2018 11:14

I used to have a can or two of Diet Coke a day all throughout and babies came out fine and pregnancy was fine too.

restingbemusedface · 31/01/2018 11:16

I suffered from HG and all I could stomach was coke Blush not even water stayed down. I’m a bit of a health freak and was imagining myself having green smoothies every day when pregnant. Nope - coke and the off bag of chips. My kids are fine btw

userabcname · 31/01/2018 12:19

Another HG sufferer here too - lived on coke for the first 17 weeks. Then when the sickness finally went in the third trimester I gorged on everything!!! Baby was perfectly healthy. Don't worry yourself.

Just want to say thanks everyone who has commented on here. It's made me feel loads better about what I've had to eat and drink while I've been pregnant. Sometimes all you see is advice to AVOID EVERYTHING, it's lovely to hear from mums who've been through it and are relaxed and sympathetic xx

lookingforthecorkscrew · 31/01/2018 17:32

TEN cans of Coke a day?!? Christ, your poor teeth!

lookingforthecorkscrew · 31/01/2018 17:33

That’s over 3 litres of Coke a day!
