When to stop taking folic acid?

I am 11wks+2 and saw my midwife today. She said advised me to stop taking folic acid fairly soon and just take vitamin D. Just wondering when I should stop?

See my midwives have repeatedly told me to keep taking it post 12 weeks as it helps with absorption of vitamin d! I wish there was one straight answer... sorry that's not very helpful but interested to hear what others have been told.

Yes I've told been to take it throughout pregnancy and was prescribed a double dose for up to 14 weeks (I think because it's twins).

Mine told me to keep taking it and take vitamin d too. I take one tablet a day that you can get from boots that has the folic and vit d in it. I'm now 21+2.

In fact my midwife said every woman should be taking folic acid in the winter regardless of pregnancy as it has so many benefits.

You can stop after the end of 1st trimester, so 14 weeks. But there's no reason to. Many people carry on taking it their whole pregnancies as it's in the pregnancy vitamins they take. But yes, you can stop taking it if you wish.

I'm 28 weeks and still taking my pregnancy vitamins - which include folic acid. Midwife agreed that its fine to take all the way through.

I was told after 12 weeks it stops doing any good. It won't help do any harm, but the benefits stop being absorbed by the baby. My pregnancy vitamin still has it in though so I'm taking it with that.

I'm 28+5 and still taking pregnacare, midwife asks at every appointment if I'm still taking it! I think you can stop after first trimester, but there's nothing wrong with continuing to take it from what I understand

I took pregnacare (which contains folic acid) throughout preg 1 and an doing the same now with preg 2. I've never heard a reason not to x

It's not dangerous to, as I understand it, but folic acid helps prevent neural tube defects and this develops in the first trimester. After that, the tubes developed so it can't help prevent defects. It won't harm the baby though basically. There is a study about it increasing asthma in children, but that was a random article online which I imagine is scaremongering as otherwise vitamins designed to be taken throughout pregnancy wouldn't contain it!

I was told I could stop it but was then put back on it at 30 weeks as I was deficient. I wish I had just kept taking it.

Lukeandlorelai4Ever · 27/01/2018 13:23

I was told to stop at 12-14 weeks with both pregnancies.
Can't take pregnacare as it makes me sick so just take vitamin c and spatone daily
