Apologies if this has been asked a billion times before (I did do a search!) are you still drinking (or reducing) Diet Coke

I know the caffeine is a concern,

The real problem with Diet Coke is the phosphoric acid which strips the calcium from your bones. Diet Coke is shocking for tooth enamel and causes osteoporosis. Caffeine isn’t anywhere near as harmful.

Artificial sweeteners make me VERY sick in pregnancy, it’s the taste they leave behind.

mamadrummer · 11/01/2018 18:22

Coke doesn't have fat in

Stop saying full fat coke, fat coke etc

BigBaboonBum · 11/01/2018 18:23

This pregnancy I feel like I’m going to pass out sometimes, and the only things that seem to help is either a coke (normal one) or Pepsi (also normal). I think sometimes the sugar rush helps or something, I have no idea

Aspartame is not a problem unless you have phenylketonuria.

Otherwise, the established safe intake level is 40mg per kg of body weight. There's 180mg in a can of diet Coke. If you weigh 60kg, or about 9.5 stone, you can therefore safely have 2400mg of aspartame a day, which is about thirteen cans.

Buxbaum · 11/01/2018 18:24

Nobody who uses the flippant phrase 'full fat Coke' actually thinks it contains any fat.

BrutusMcDogface · 11/01/2018 18:31

Aspartame is fine.

AmyJessicax26 · 11/01/2018 18:38

Had no idea for my pregnancy about caffeine no idea why was told no energy drinks but that's about it ! He turned out fine ! Keep in in mind this time ahaha x

Carbohol78 · 11/01/2018 19:11

Well, if we are looking at between 5 and 12 cans a day being within the caffeine limits, then I think even I’m ok! 😹

@crumbs and @dotcottondotcom - I totally recognise that Diet Coke in particular is not a healthy drink, those are risks I am aware of and accept; however, for the next 7 months, this isn’t just my body, and specifically in pregnancy, caffeine has been linked, by many recognised medical bodies, to a heightened risk of miscarriage

Decaf diet is my favourite coke product, it’s 💯💯

Carbohol78 · 11/01/2018 20:44

@Lemony - maybe it’s like gin and I just need to break the pain barrier 🤔

To be fair the irony was not lost on me when I gave up caffeine yet I had a 27 weeker and one of the first things she was put on in NICU was caffeine 🙈

I wasn’t so anxious with second pregnancy after that!

agteacht · 11/01/2018 23:17

A coffee a day is still okay right?

Carbohol78 · 11/01/2018 23:20

@agteacht yep, everyone seems united that in moderation it is still fine :)

Thank you!!

Mrstobe90 · 12/01/2018 00:53

I normally have the caffeine free diet cokes if I’m craving something fizzy but once a week, DH and I go to a pub quiz with a couple of friends and I’ll have a pint of normal Diet Coke. As long as you don’t have too much, you should be fine. Smile

tiptopteepe · 12/01/2018 00:56

I love diet coke and I have had to watch how much im drinking especially when I buy the big bottles. I thought it was okay in moderation?
I do buy the gold one when I can but that is harder to find, they dont stock it in all the supermarkets round here.
I dont drink tea or coffee at all though so that helps control the caffiene intake

spugzbunny · 12/01/2018 09:47

@tiptopteepe according to nhs guidelines, if you had no other caffeine in your diet (coffee, tea, chocolate etc) then you could have 5 cans of Diet Coke a day. That's a lot! Don't worry!

itshappening · 12/01/2018 14:06

I used to drink a lot but have managed to get it down to one can a day of Coke zero (less caffeine than diet coke, but one can of diet coke also well within caffeine limits). I don't really have any other caffeine sources that I know of except very occasional bit of chocolate.

Aside from caffeine it isn't good for us, as we know, so I am hoping to cut it out. I have been surprised...amazed....that some days I haven't had any or missed it much.
