Morning just found out I'm pregnant which I'm shocked about as wasn't planned etc! But also over the moon aswell only problem is I can't remember the first date of my last period Cos they have been so sporadic for years. I really need to find out how far gone I am so what shall I do?

Congratulations! Smile

What's your best guess? Go with that and err on the side of booking in early. Then the first scan will form things up.

Battleax · 23/12/2017 06:59

Firm not form.

Oh no hang on, I'm assuming it's too late for a digital test for no real reason. Try one of those first? They tell you how many weeks you are.

KTD27 · 23/12/2017 07:03

Congrats!! What a great Christmas gift 😀

Take some folic acid and vitamin D and sit down and try to have a think about roughly when your last period was.
You can take a clear blue with weeks digital pregnancy test though they’re not an exact science - if your period was months ago and there’s been a fair bit of sex (not to put too fine a point on it) it could show you’re 3/4 weeks pregnant or even 4+. Might help you come up with a date.

Then I’d look into your local hospitals - mine asks for self referrals so no GP trip needed. Others you’d need to go see your GP to register your pregnancy and be referred to the midwife. They’ll book you in in a few weeks and then arrange a scan - possibly quickly if you have no clue at all when you had your last period.
Other than that lay off the booze and get lots of rest as you’re likely to be very tired!
Happy and healthy 9 months (or less!) to you

Digital tests tell you how many weeks since conception. The whole of the rest of the world of Pregnancy * dating works on date from LMP, so you need to add a bit to the number of weeks a digital test estimates.

Thank you all for your comments. So the best thing right now is to go and buy a digital test to tell me how many weeks then book in to see a doctor to get a proper scan ?

Yes. Look up pregnancy "booking in" policy on your surgery website or give the receptionist a call.

Toasttea · 23/12/2017 07:33

Yes do a test then go to your doctor and tell them. They will refer you to the local midwife depending how it works in your area. You will get booked in for your first booking appointment with the midwife then she arranges your 12 week scan

Didntcomeheretofuckspiders · 23/12/2017 08:33

I wouldn’t bother with a digital test tbh. Your local hospital will have an early pregnancy unit, if you ring them, they can arrange a dating scan.

fusspot66 · 23/12/2017 08:36

Don't take vitamin D - not good in pregnancy
I think the previous poster meant folic acid supplements
Congratulations.

Vitamin D AND folic acid are important in pregnancy. Folic acid up until 12 weeks, vitamin D all the way through pregnancy and if you are breastfeeding, until you stop. It helps your body to absorb calcium and prevent osteoporosis.

Buglife · 23/12/2017 08:46

Congratulations! Folic acid and vitamin d are important, a growing baby and then a feeding baby can deplete your stores of vit D and especially in the U.K. winter where we get very little sun!

You don’t often need to get a proper doctors appointment to confirm pregnancy, in my area we self refer to a midwife and only if some health issue demanded it would we need any doctor care. Once you are booked in with a midwife they will send you dates for 12 week scan etc. I also wasn’t sure when my last period tarted this time around (only a couple of weeks confusion) so she booked my scan on the earlier side as I can go back if need be to get the nuchal fold measurement (which is the issue with having the scan before 13.5 weeks). Have lots of rest, the first weeks can be tough and you will feel tired!
