Bleeding, clots, TMI but heartbeat

Hi all,

My other half had spotting early on and on Friday we had an early scan and baby was fine with heartbeat measuring 9 weeks. On Saturday she had a lot of bleeding and still has including clots. We thought it was ending and hospital won't see us until Thursday so we paid to have private scan tonight. Baby was fine with heartbeat, no blood on scan, and sonographer just as confused as us.

She is still bleeding - hospital don't seem interested. What can this be and what can we do?!?

It could be a number of things.

I had this. I bled from 9weeks all the way through until birth with my first. It will be such a worry but put focus on the positives, there’s a heartbeat and it won’t be long until she feels kicks which is a massive reassurance.
For me the reason was that I had a polyp attach to the uterus wall and grow through my cervix. As baby got larger it pushed on the growth causing irritation and more bleeding. They didn’t find it for me until 20something weeks, however if scanned they can see it early on.
My daughter was completely fine and healthy. I also did need iron tablets etc due to losing blood, so make sure that’s kept on top of.
I was told it would occur with every pregnancy but it had disappeared 3months postnatal when I went to have it removed and I had no issues with my last pregnancy or this one.

Sorry just to add, when I say if scanned I mean internal and specifically looked for.

I had loads and loads of bleeding at around 11 weeks. Heavier than my heaviest ever period. Continued like that for a few days and then slowed down for the next few weeks. I had a subchrionic haematoma (although I don't think I can spell it right!) It was massive. And was still there (but smaller) at the 20 week scan. Baby was fine.

It's not that the hospital aren't interested it's just that (a) lots of people bleed and it's probably fine and (b) if the worst was to happen there is nothing they can do at 9 weeks. But focus on (a) and stay away from Google. Google is not your friend. Hope all goes well

Ok thanks both. Can we demand the hospital does an internal? They are only doing a normal one Thursday we assume, and if it's anything like last time if they see baby is ok they will send us home.

Issue is partner is bleeding loads and feels shattered and worn down with it all, and we are worried the more bleeding is risking pregnancy.

Bleeding doesn't cause miscarriage. It either IS miscarriage - the foetus has died or isn't viable and the body has begun shedding it - or it isn't and in your case, fortunately, it isn't since you have a foetus with a heartbeat and on track for dates.

Once that's established there's really nothing to be done tbh. If your wife bleeds for a long time she may get low iron and needs supplements but there isn't anything they can do either way to stop bleeding. Sometimes a scan can show where blood is coming from but plenty of times it can't. An internal scan is unlikely to show anything much more at this stage - internal scans just help with visualising the foetus in the very early days when it's very small because it's a better angle on something that's still well inside your pelvis.

There honestly isn't really anything the hospital can offer you. You just have to wait for it to stop.

You can’t demand an internal unless you’re paying privately. It’s actually very very common to bleed in early pregnancy so for this reason alone they won’t scan everyone.
They’ll wait until it’s been going on a while. I was 19weeks when I was actually examined and over 20 when I got my scan/diagnosis (by at which point I’d got used to it).
You can however ask for blood tests for iron levels. The last thing she needs is to become anaemic. I’m now anaemic and with this pregnancy I rattle like a pill bottle and it’s even more exhausting, I wish I’d got it thoroughly sorted 1st time.
