i have a friend at work who is pregnant and isn't sure of her dates cos she doesn't know exactly when her last period was. she thinks she is about 6 weeks. she doesn't want to wait until 12 weeks for a scan because you get more accurate dates if it is done between 7 and 10 weeks, so she is going to pretend she has had bleeding to get an earlier scan.

Given that only 5% of women give birth on their EDD, even when it's been calculated via a scan, I think this is a complete waste of time! (Leaving aside the immorality of lying to obtain resources AND the fear of karma.) There's a four week safety net around an EDD, so it's hardly that accurate - they'll date at 12 weeks too, it'll just be even less accurate than the early scan.

It's true that the dating scan at 6 weeks or whatever is very much a guess. It is often an internal scan, but you can, of course, spot briefly and then stop bleeding. I've done it. And had a scan because of it. (But I'd miscarried before, so I was able to get scans whenever.)

I can understand her wanting very much to know how pregnant she is - for one thing, it's nice to know when you are really past the 14 week thing, it's good to know when you can hope or expect the morning sickness to stop, etc etc.

But lying to people about medical stuff is just wrong.

i don't know i had a scan at 6 weeks and one at 7 weeks and they were abdominal ones.

Is that true? Dating is significantly more accurate at 7-10 weeks, compared to 12 weeks? I can't find a single Internet link to back that one up, it's totally different from what everywhere else says -- this one says ideal stage is 8-12 weeks pregnant .

nappyaddict · 17/04/2007 19:22

well the earliest a crown rump length measurement can be done is at about 7 weeks and that is the most accurate way of dating a pregnancy. after 12 weeks the baby starts to uncurl so the CRL measurement can no longer be accurately be used and the BPD or HC has to be used. generally the earlier the scan the more accurate.

NA, I had a scan today. My MW thought I was 14 weeks pg because of a light bleed but she said if it was a period I would be 9/10 weeks.
Anyway the scan said I was 7 weeks but have been told it can be quite unaccurate at this stage so have to go back in 5 weeks.

So what I'm trying to say is your friend maybe better off waiting.
