Is My Pregnancy Scan Normal

I went to an early pregnancy scan today with the thought in my head that I was about 6 weeks pregnant. They did an internal scan and saw an approx 5mm cystic mass in my uterus.

The sonographer said it's too early to say whether or not is is a viable pregnancy and she couldn't see a yolk sac at this stage.

I'd gone to the early pregnancy appointment because of tummy cramps (which I am almost 100% positive is IBS and nothing baby related) and they have taken blood today which they will compare with more blood they plan to take in another 2 days time. This, I'm told, is to see whether I have a normal pregnancy, an ectopic pregnancy or a failing pregnancy.

I felt a mixture of disappointment that instead of seeing the early stages of my baby growing away I only saw a black circle which the nurse would not confirm is a pregnancy and also anxiety that there may be a problem.

I've got to wait for 48 hours now until I have my next lot of blood taken and I'm still in a lot of pain (not been for a #2 in 3-4 days!)

What I'm hoping is that there are more women out there who have had this experience and who have had healthy pregnancies develop?

Just some reassurance please ladies.

This is my first baby (at 33) and my partner is working overseas during this time which makes it a little more unsettling.

Oh Olivia that is not nice for you at all. If it's any help at all - i am 6 weeks pregnant and went for a scan this week as my cramps have been unbearable for three weeks. I was sure i was miscarrying or something was wrong.

The nurse did an internal scan and saw a pregnancy which reassured me however no heart beat as yet.

At 5 weeks you are still at a super early stage. As far as I know, the "egg yolk" doesn't appear until 5.5-6 weeks so what you are saying in fact sounds really normal.

Im no doctor but hopefully the above will reassure you.

Take lots of care of yourself, get out for walks to clear your head and then 48 hrs will be here before you know it. xx

Zoers35 thank you so much for taking the time to reply! That actually does reassure me.

I never thought I would be one of those women who obsessed over my pregnancy because I never really thought I would have children until I met the love of my life.

But something happens to you the moment you know you're growing a little life, the maternal Instinct kicks in straight away.

I'll keep you posted...

Congrats on your pregnancy and good luck lovely xx

I had a private scan when I was somewhere around 5-6 weeks and they basically couldn't reassure me and made me an appointment for 7-8 weeks, when they could see what needed to be seen.

Don't be disheartened Flowers

So today I got a call from the hospital to ask me to come in a day earlier than expected because my bloods ate bit higher than they would normally expect. So naturally I started worrying!

However they did another internal examination and things were so much better than yesterday! Today they could clearly see the gestation sac and the yolk sac. Turns it I'm 5 weeks and not 3.

The nurse and sonographer were obviously in a rush yesterday and left me feeling so unsure of what was going on. Today they were amazing and confirmed that everything is tickety boo and bubba is growing away nicely.

Happy days!
