I am starting to get worried as our hospital in traffic is at least 45 mins - 1 hr away. I keep hearing 2nd labours are much faster. My first was 11 hrs. How fast was yr second and did you know it was happening before it actually really kicked off?

Blimey Chasingrabbits!!

I presume it was a homebirth then?

Forgive me for asking a personal question but... were you dilated before waters broke, or did it all happen that quickly as soon as they did?

ChasingRabbits · 01/04/2007 20:06

Yes it was a homebirth, was planned as a homebirth mainly cos ds1 was quick. Wasn't planned as an unassisted which is what happened.

No idea if I was dilated beforehand, he was born at 36+6 so obviously hadn't had any checks.

Waters went in a trickle, I sat on the bed on a change mat trickling away reading and after nearly 10 mins thought I better tell dh.
He came up, I had a contraction so then called the labour ward.
MW called back while I was having 3rd contraction, dh took the call and I said she better get here quick as the baby was coming.
Squatted down by the side of the bed so that dh could cut some bubblewrap to deliver onto and thought I better just check nothing was happening, put my hand down, had another contraction and delivered his head.
Said to dh "the baby is coming", he said "I know it is coming", turned round and saw the head coming out and freaked a little while I delieverd the rest of him ;)

I had BH's pretty constantly (4/5 an hour every hour) from around 27 weeks (starting at 20 weeks).
Was in hospital at 33 weeks because anti-b's for UTI had cleared up the UTI but BH's continued, MW sent me to be monitored as it was a few days before xmas and she just wanted to make she it was all ok. They put me on a trace for an hour then panicked - which was quite funny as that was the best hour I had had in a month (just sitting there, feet up etc). So then had to stay in overnight while I had the 2-course steriod shots for the lungs.

But when actual labour started it brought it home to me that the BH's HADN'T been labour contractions.

So it was either a very quick labour or one of the longest on history (3 months)!

I did say I like posting about it - lol.

katylou25 · 01/04/2007 20:38

DS1 - 9 hours
ds2 - 4.5 hours

My god, I thought DD2 was quick, but after reading some of these, I'm not so sure!!
With DD1 I was in labour for 36 hrs. Ended up having diamorphine and then an epidural, but luckily managed without further intervention.
With DD2 my contractions started at 11am, but were easily manageable, stronger by 1pm, but my waters broke while I was in the bath at 2pm. Got out of bath, summoned DP to come back from walking dog in park, went to hospital.(Luckily only a 10 minute drive to hospital.) Got there 15 mins before DD2 was born at 3pm.
When we got to the hospital I crawled across the carpark on my hands and knees, mooing. In broad daylight FFS. How embarrassing!
I was in hospital for my entire first labour, so was determined to hang on at home for as long as I could with 2nd. But I would say with a 45 minute drive, go to the hospital as soon as the contractions stop being easily manageable. Good luck.

LadyOfTheFlowers · 01/04/2007 20:44

ds2 took 4 hours first contraction to birth.

Jonze · 01/04/2007 23:52

Oh dear God...ds took 1.5 hours from first contraction (didn't have bh) until he delivered. Actually didn't make it to my hospital, and cab swerved into closest A&E. By the time I got to the triage window, I had delivered his head.

I'm really petrified how long this next one will take!

LedodgyCheapEasterEggsAreASin · 01/04/2007 23:59

It depends with me first labour started in the Monday I had her on the Thursday morning , second birth was 40 mins start to finish .

IdrisTheDragon · 02/04/2007 00:02

1st - waters broke at 6:30 am. Niggles until 6:45pm when contractions properly started. DS born at 2:50am after 2 hours of pushing.

So 8 hours from start of contractions or about 20 hours from waters breaking.

2nd - contractions started at 6:45am. DD born at 1:26pm after again about 2 hours of pushing. So about 6.5 hours in total.

IdrisTheDragon · 02/04/2007 00:04

No niggles before hand with either one (although did have a sweep the day beofre with DD).
