I got my bfp! Now what?

Grin we are super happy. I'm just so nervous it won't stick and I'm terrible for letting my hopes get up! I'm quite an anxious person anyway.

What do I do next? Do I phone my GP this week to get on his list of pregnant people for care? Grin

I had been tracking sex and periods quite religiously so I know I conceived two weeks ago. Does this make me 4 weeks/1 month in pregnancy terms? Is the scan at 12 weeks after Ovulation or 12 weeks since last period?

Sorry for all the questions!

Haha dont apologise! Ok, my two peneth (2 young kids)

  1. Ring the gp surgery at some point next week to see what their procedure is. Some want you in for bloods to confirm. Some refer you straight to MW team. Some give you the number to self refer.

  2. gave a chat with dh/dp about who you want to tell and when. The earlier you tell people the longer you spend talking only about your pg as everyone uses it as conversation. Most people wait to tell extended friends and family until after the first scan, but having a couple of closes trusted people for support if anything goes wrong can be helpful

3 - you technically count from the first day of your last period so whatever date that was. The dating scan will flex it a bit, but not by all that much. I knew the day id conceived ds (only dtd once that month!!) and my scan due date corroborated that, but I still counted as first day of period in weeks.

Thank you Napqueen (great username BTW, hope I earn that title in a year).

The first day of my last period was 14 April so that would make me 4+2 I think?

Thanks so much for answering my questions, I'm sure I'll be on this forum a lot with many more!

If anyone else has any advice/input that would be great.

There are calculators online that work it out for you, id make an appointment then you normally get contacted by MW to book in the scan.

All pregnancy dating is done from your last period- a lot of people don't know ovulation date.

Scan will be at 12 weeks since then, approx, but then they may alter your EDD based on baby's measurements- I moved forward from 12+3 to 13+1 at that point! They will then use this date for everything

It seems to vary massively by area how you book in with antenatal services. I asked at GP reception and was given the midwives' number and just told to ring myself. I wouldn't have seen GP at all if I didn't have meds that needed checking. So I haven't seen GP since about 7 weeks.
Then, my scan date letter came through after the booking appointment as creating the records at booking in triggered the process.

My advice is: get ready for nothing to happen. GPs just confirm a pregnancy by making you pee on a stick same as at home. Then I'll be weeks before you hear anything from the hospital. It can be a frustrating time as it feels nobody thinks it as momentous and important as you do!

With my first:

My GP didn't even get me to do a test to confirm. Just took my word for it.

She just asked me to book in to see the midwife when I would be 8 weeks (my midwife is at the doctors surgery - I live in a small village).

At 8 week appointment ("booking appointment") midwife will go over your dates, family medical history etc and give you your blue book (not sure if colour varies by area!). You have to take these notes EVERYWHERE. And don't ever go to an antenatal appointment without them - you'll get absolutely bollocked!!

12 week scan is 12 weeks after the first day of your last period

Oh yes you've just reminded me - I only had to pee on a stick with my first and I suspect it was cos I couldn't believe it. With my second she took my word for it too!

It can be a bit underwhelming when you're so excited, lol.

Congratulations. You're now in for the long wait til the 12 week scan, time seems to stand still.

Where I am the GP isn't involved in maternity care at all, you self refer to the midwife via the online referral form on the local hospital website & then the midwife calls you after a few days to make your booking in appointment which is normally held around 8 weeks & then following this a scan date comes through the post.

If you haven't already started to you need to take folic acid & a vitamin D supplement. You can get pregnancy specific supplements but they tend to be expensive & pregnacare in particular makes a lot of people nauseous.

I told my mum & a close friend at work but other than that waited until after 12 week scan.

Thanks everyone. I had wondered about vitamins- I'll Google and see exactly what I need and when.

I am glad it counts from after the first day of my last period. I thought I may have to wait another 12 weeks from now, but its 'only' 8 if I'm 4+2.

We have discussed getting a private early scan at 8 weeks as a bit of reassurance we haven't imagined the whole thing and to keep my worries at bay. We can afford to, should we?

Congrats OP!! If it will help to put your mind at ease then go for the private scan. Otherwise you'll be waiting weeks and that can be torturous!

I had Private early scans with both of mine. It was a great reassurance
