Caffeine?

How much caffeine do you consume a day? I tend to have a cup of tea in the morning and one in the evening. Sometimes I have a full fat coke but do try to stick to caffeine free coke. My biggest vice is chocolate though. I have developed the biggest sweet tooth and I always forget to take into account the caffeine in chocolate 🙈

I found 'expecting better' by EMily Ostler to be really helpful in this - she pulls the research into different pregnancy rules apart so you can see where they cam from and make up your own mind on things like caffeine.

From memory I think she says that there's a like between coffee in take and a higher risk of miscarriage. This isn't the same as high caffeine consumption causing higher miscarriage risk. She explains that the effect is only noticeable in coffee (not really other caffeinated drinks such as tea) and it's likely that the cause is more likely to be - if you are feeling or being sick, you are less likely to be drinking coffee (as it really just doesn't sit well with nausea!). Being sick is a good sign that pregnancy is progressing well. If you don't feel sick at all you are more likely to still enjoy drinking larger amounts of coffee. There is a higher chance of miscarriage if you don't feel sick at all as it could be that the pregnancy hormones etc are lower.

So, I think as with all things, don't go too crazy but I really wouldn't worry too much if you're enjoying a few coffees or cups of tea.

I don't really worry too much about it. But then I normally only have maybe a max of 4 cups of tea a day and rarely drink coffee or coke. Chocolate I don't count. I figure some days I might go over, but most days I'm probably under. I switched to decaf tea on an evening for sleeping purposes a while ago, so I drink that if I think it's been a caffeine heavy day!
