Can I ask to be induced ?

Is it possible to ask to be induced? The hospital that I have to deliver in is a just over a 2 hour drive away. I'm totally panicking about making it to the hospital on time and also delivering without any pain relief . I know my 2nd delivery was a lot faster than the first . Does the 3rd tend to be even faster than the 2nd

I'm not sure they would induce you for that, is a home birth an option?

No not really I'd rather be in a hospital I think in case there were any emergencies or complications as the hospital is over 2 hours away

Well you can ask, but inductions tend to be very unpleasant and less to much higher risk of complications, so you'd need to be very sure its what you want.

Can I ask why you are going to a hospital so far away? Do you or the baby have known medical issues that mean you need specialist care at that hospital? If so I suppose they'd be more willing to consider induction or c-section.

Our local hospital is only a midwife led unit and I'm a consultant led pregnancy

ok that makes sense then, you don't have a choice of hospital.

In your shoes, id speak to the consultant: if you've had quick labours before it's very valid to ask how you're supposed to deal with the 2 hour trip (plus risk of traffic, road closures etc). See what they can suggest in terms of induction/c-section.

That's so far away OP I'm not surprised you're concerned. Definitely speak to your consultant as they must have this problem crop up frequently? If you're consultant led because you're higher risk then surely they can't let you have such a high risk of delivering without anyone present?

I would definitely ask - without going in to detail I had an induction scheduled for a similarly 'social' reason (no medical indication) and they were happy to do so given fairly extenuating circumstances. As it was I didn't need it but I would certainly discuss it with them, especially as you are consultant led anyway.

I was induced. Ended up with a three day Labour and a EMCS. Are you sure you want one op?

It seems silly that given you are high risk you have to travel so far! What are you under the consultant for if you don't mind me asking? I'm just wondering if it's worth asking if they'll let you deliver at the birthing centre instead so you don't have the risk of potentially delivering en route to hospital?

We were 45 mins from hospital and my previous labour had been about an hour (ds1 also quite fast for a first baby) so I was worried with ds3. I ended up with the longest labour of all 3 by a long stretch!

I think I'm consultant led because I had a retained placenta in my last delivery which had to be removed by consultant in theatre so I totally would ask to stay at local hospital but can't really Incase I retain my placenta again as would just end up gettin referred to the other hospital anyway and would rather be already at it incase this does happen again.i have no experience of being induced, have heard it can be worse for some folk so really dunno would it be for the best or not. Just know he thought of travelling so far is totally freekin me out.

I've got a similar situation, though not quite as bad as it's only an hour away. It's worrying me too. I'm also worried about turning up too early and being told to go home again and then not making it back in time.

This is my second time, and I found the first time quite confusing. I was induced but had back labour and the midwife managed to convince me that I wasn't even having proper contractions yet until I was 10cm and needed to push. I've been almost hoping that I get induced again.

It's scary... but, people keep telling me, there will be plenty of time.

With a travel time of 2 hours though, I would ask about induction. I'd also speak to your local midwife, as she must come across this all the time.

Spoke with consultant today and he says yes I can get induced :)

Ah that's good. do you know when they will do it? obv you still have the risk of going into labour earlier

My sister in law is 35 weeks and she was supposed to be induced this week because the baby is 3 weeks bigger so obviously running out of space a lot quicker and its better for both of their health to be induced now. She went for the appointment today infact and they turned around and said they wouldnt induce her because if he was that uncomfortable he would come out. Unless it is life threatening they dont or wont induce until your at least 2 weeks over due. Even then you dont ask, the midwife tells you. I dont think they'll let you x

Yea there's still that risk so fingers crossed that doesn't happen . Wasn't actually discussed when today but I have another appointment in 2 weeks . I might possibly be gettin induced at 37 weeks anyway now

The consultant said today that they would quite happily induce me. It is however a different situation to your sister in law. There have already been a few risky incidents due to the fact our local hospital is now a midwife lead unit
