Ferrous sulphate alternatives?

30 wks and been told iron is low - prescribed ferrous sulphate and day 3 of taking pills now. Not going well, every side effect possible pretty much and considering I had HG for large part of this pregnancy and was just feeling better it's rather frustrating! Wondered if anyone had tried other iron sources (supplement), sure I'd seen a mention before of a gentler alternative. Obviously trying to combat issue through good diet sickness permitting.

Spatone sachets, much gentler on the stomach.

I take Feroglobin liquid as well as spatone and it's got my levels back up. The two sorts of tablets I tried I couldn't even tolerate one a day let alone 3 a day which was prescribed.

Ferrous fumarate is often better tolerated and gp can prescribe Grin

I second Spatone, taken with something with vic C in increases absorption of one or the other too. I swear by a Spatone/Berocca combo if you can have those in pregnancy. I think I had two sachets a day in my last pregnancy and they did pull my iron levels up well. I had the prescribed tablets the time before and they made me so ill, it was horrible, after four weeks on them iron levels had actually gone down!

I took Floradix on my midwife's recommendation. A glass of orange juice helps absorption (and takes away the odd taste).

Well if you are a lover of facts and statistics then this online leaflet it absolute gold! All backed up by studies and everything. Spatone leaflet. Good for general advice about iron absorption not just pushing the product.
