Booking appointment?

When are you meant to have the booking appointment and how do I go about arranging it? I'm 8 weeks pregnant with 2nd baby. Phoned GP surgery and receptionist booked me in to see my GP at 10 weeks but I'm worried that'll be too late to organise 12 week scan. Do you think I should contact them again?

It varies from area to area.

Procedure where I live is, you see the community midwife at the GP surgery. You can't self refer - you need the pregnancy confirmed by a GP or nurse to get referred to the midwives (apparently they had problems with women who weren't actually pregnant self referring).
I had my first midwife appointment for booking at around 8 weeks, then the midwife made appointments for 12 week scans etc.

I would normally say that the GP receptionist would be well placed to advise on how it works locally, but saying that OP doesn't need to see anyone until after 12 weeks does sound odd and would make me wonder if the receptionist has got things muddled, given that the scan has to be done within certain dates if you want the Downs screening.

If you've got a number for the midwife team, I think I'd call that to speak to them directly about booking appointments, scans etc. Good luck.

Oh dear, just relax.

Usually GP receptionist will give you advise especially when they know that it's your first baby.

Karma has a point, sometimes it is difficult to book an appointment or to even speak to GP so better to call 111 cause they are there for advise too.

When to use 111
You should use the NHS 111 service if you urgently need medical help or advice but it's not a life-threatening situation.
Call 111 if:
• you need medical help fast but it's not a 999 emergency
• you think you need to go to A&EE_or need another NHS urgent care service
• you don't know who to call or you don't have a GP to call
• you need health information or reassurance about what to do next

@ Ilovegreatbritish - I hope everything goes smooth on your first appointment. I wish you all the best.
I apologise to you if I made you worry more, didn't intend to.

Anyway, peace to all. I am now going to get ready for a trip to the seaside with husband & daughter.

Have a nice bank holiday! Smile smile! Smile

Thanks everyone. I've not checked mn for ages and loads of posts here! It seems it varies a great deal from area to area. GP didn't check I was pregnant with 1st baby - just took my word for it. I do think the receptionist was a bit confused when she said I didn't need to see anyone until 13 weeks. Don't worry KARMA, you didn't worry me Smile. I'm feeling fairly ok about it all but was just concerned that I'd miss 12 week scan if I didn't get booking appt in time. Will phone midwives tomorrow to see if I can get appt.
