What did your newborn wear?

I've been taking stock of all the clothes etc that I've got. I'm 36+3 and really thinking I should have everything I need by now.
I've got hundreds of vests and sleep suits (is a sleepsuit the same as a baby grow?) and a few pairs of dungarees. Loads of knitted cardigans but not much in the way of tshirts tops and trousers.
How much will a newborn realistically be in outfits would you say?
I'm feeling utterly clueless!! If it's as nice a summer as they're saying its going to be then we may not need many clothes at all!!

Babygros all the way. Actual clothes are so restrictive and uncomfortable for newborns. Don't bother for a few months. Mine were about 2-3 months when i started with eg soft leggings or soft dungarees.

And yes a sleep suit is a babygro

DD wore a dress once or twice as a newborn but otherwise vests and babygrows (or just a vest or even just a nappy - August baby)

Vest and babygrow until about 3 months then started with the odd outfit once he'd started making clothes last more than a couple of hours before they were covered with bodily fluids! He wore a cardigan on a couple of occasions (January baby) but generally just had a blanket tucked over him in the pram if cold. Each to their own though! Personally I hate t shirts on babies as they ride up. Poppered vest under trousers better.

Yes a sleepsuit is the same as a baby grow. I didnt use proper clothes at all. A newborn will sleep a lot and a vest and sleepsuit is far comfier. Also don't buy too many clothes - they grow very quickly.

Babygros/sleepsuits and vests all the way ( with cardi if its cool) shes now nearly 7 months and has worn an outfit 3 times! It is my second though, with my first i def did more outfits / dresses etc!

Few soft comfy outfits for special occasions but largely babygros. Comfy, easy to change and also easy to sling one or two spare into the bag if you go out.

My DD was 6m before my dm pointedly said she thought she should be in clothes!

Lots of changes every day and sometimes at night. Plus spares that live in the changing bag.

I guess I worked on 2-3 multipacks of vests plus 3 multipacks of baby grows. A couple of comfy outfits I was given. Then maybe 3-4 cardigans.

The number of changes you will need will to an extent depend on how explosive the poos are, how often your baby is sick, how often you want to do laundry and how quickly you can dry clothes. We used a lot of muslin.

Newborns sleep a lot so babygros and / or vests are the most practical depending on how warm it is.

I still dress ds2 (8wks) in babygros or rompersuits (sleeveless / legless babygros) as I think he looks comfortable plus it's practical for all the nappy changes. If you can, leave the tags on some of the clothes. As a pp said they grow really quickly and you probably won't get any wear out of the some of the things you have bought or gifts people may buy. Ds2 is already in 3-6 month.

I dressed mine in sleep suits til they were about 11 months old. They're so much comfier. Clothes on little babies are just faffy and annoying.

Babygros 99% of the time.

Or, like my summer newborn, nothing but a nappy because she was too hot.

Mostly vests or babygrows. This time round I've bought some tshirts and shorts, but I like clothes on babies so it's nice not to be so practical sometimes! Rompers are a great compromise.

YY to rompers. Nice and cool in summer plus you get to see little tiny newborn feet

I had a summer baby and it was vests, sleepsuits or just a romper on a hot day. People kindly gave gifts of 'real' clothes but he didn't often wear them because they were too fiddly and uncomfortable. I gradually made the transition to long sleeve vest and trousers once he became more mobile and then t-shirts etc later on

Babygros, vests & cardigans for at least 18 months 12 months.

Great thanks ladies, feeling much better and less panicked now. No need for a quick shopping trip anymore then!
Now just need the wee man to come out so I can put him in all the cute wee baby grows. Wish he'd hurry up. Yes, I'm a bit impatient!!

Mine wore just vest and sleepsuits until 6-9 months. Then some dungerees.

So I would say you have plenty.

If it gets hot when they are born just put in the baby vest. If warmer but breezy leave vest off and just babygrow. When colder add vest and babygrow together plus cardigan

Babies grow. Most things under 1 year don't last long before next size. For us 10 babygrows and vests and 2-3 cardigans in each size were adaquate up until a year.

After that the same number of clothes roughly but different types

Don't be too impatient OP! Enjoy the last days of your free time and as much uninterrupted sleep as you can.

Another vote here for babygros although I do have a soft spot for a T shirt and leggings combo as they are easy to change after an explosive poo. DD (2 weeks old) is wearing that combo right now.

I also love the baby grobags we use at night; safer than a blanket and they can't be kicked off.

How I wish I had stuck to that. I had so many people kindly giving/buying tons of stuff plus what I had bought.

I remember feeling so overwhelmed with washing, sorting, cleaning, selling, sorting for charity shop - heaps and heaps of stuff.

We now try to live minimalist. So much easier to literally live without being surrounded by mountains of toys & clothes.

Baby gros n vests. Trying to dress a scrunched up newborn in anything else is very time consuming and uncomfortable for baby. Their little legs don't drop down for a while, and arms are tucked in for a while too.

Babygros and various dress up costumes. Treat them like dollies before they are old enough to object!

And ignore anyone who tries to tell you a baby is not a toy........

My dh tells me that all the time when I'm getting a bit carried away. Suffice to say at Halloween baby WILL be dressed as a pumpkin and at Christmas a Santa outfit will be an essential item.
