Does pregnancy heartburn breakthrough omeprazole?

I've been on omeprazole (20mg delayed release) for years and I was wondering whether heartburn, or dyspepsia and nausea, in early pregnancy can "break through" the medication? I'm trying to figure out if it's that or a side effect to a medication. Timing is such that it could be either.

Either way I'll be on the meds for another week yet and I'll just need to deal with it and suck down gaviscon (or maybe get a drip line of it started).

I'm just curious really about other peoples experiences and yes, I know I could ask a doctor but sometimes what they "know" is different to what other people have experienced :)

I was prescribed Omeprazole towards the end of my second trimester. It was truly life changing, and I wish I'd been prescribed it before. It completely sorted my terrible heartburn that Gaviscon didn't touch.

The gp said I could up my dose if necessary, and I was on 20mg twice per day. So I suppose if you already need it, 20mg a day might not be enough when pregnant.

Oh you were on 40mg a day? Damn. 20mg is usually fine but it the other night felt like I'd completely forgotten to take it (so I double checked!). The dyspepsia is what's driving me crazy this morning at the moment, and the nausea.

The "damn", and you've said you've only got a week left has made me worry a bit for you. Omeprazole is safe to take, and made my pregnancy bearable. Carry on I'd say - it'll only get worse. I only got my prescription after I mucked up my back and hip as I had to sleep upright to combat the heartburn and resulting nausea.

I really wouldn't stop taking it. Get a higher prescription if you need it, and have a better pregnancy. Hope I've got the wrong end of the stick.

I was prescribed omeprazole in my second trimester as well and it was the only thing that helped me with heartburn. I didn't have any side effects with it either.

You'll probably need 40mg, I'm 35 weeks and went up to 40mg in the last few weeks. Still have some reflux at night but it's definitely better. I try not to eat after 7:30-8pm, and also take a large dose of gaviscon before bed which helps too. I keep the gaviscon by the bed in case I wake up refluxing/choking!

I've been on omeprazole for years (20mg) but on Monday was placed on an antibiotic following a root canal. I've got to take the antibiotic for another week and I wasn't sure if it was stopping my omeprazole from working (I was told it could upset my intestine).

I'm 10DPO and POAS and I'm PREGNANT! So it turns out that yes, pregnancy heartburn CAN breakthrough the omeprazole so I'm going to have to talk to my doc about upping my dose to 40mg or something else for this nausea!
