reusing mattress for 2nd baby

Just wondered what your thoughts were.

We used a snuzpod for DS1. He will be 19 months when second one is due in August. We used a mattress protector so the actual mattress is spotless. Has remained in spare room so hasn't got damp over winter.

I can remember reading somewhere that you should always buy a brand new mattress for subsequent babies. I'm guessing this is what I will do for piece of mind and obviously safety, but just interested what you thought about the whole thing?

I'm a paranoid mess about SIDS and as the official advice is new mattress for a new baby, that's what I'll be doing if we have another.

I used the same one. It hadnt been into storage (so no chance of dampness etc), we simply took it off dd one day and gave it to ds that night. He had been in a crib for six months though by the time he went onto the big mattress.

I'm going to buy a new crib mattress and then new cot bed. For the relatively small cost I'd rather not take any risk. Although the risk is minimal, it doesn't seem worth it.

I think that it would be fine to use it again. I used the same mattress for mine as it was in immaculate condition. Just buy a new protector if you're really worried.

I reused ours as it had a removable washable cover and the underneath was waterproof and could be cleaned

If it's in very good nic and to be used by a sibling, can you steam clean it and sit it out in the sun for the day. Sunlight is great

It can be common to use a second-hand mattress either from friends and family, or from your previous children. There is some research that found an increased chance of SIDS when using a second-hand mattress although the link is not yet proven. To help reduce this risk, if you are using a second-hand mattress make sure the mattress you choose was previously completely protected by a waterproof cover, and then use one for your baby as well. The mattress should also still be firm and flat to keep your baby sleeping safely.

(I am sure I read that the risk was increased by a mattress from another family but not as big when used for a sibling )

I'd be to worried about the SIDS risk to be honest. We can afford to buy a new mattress so for me it's an unnecessary risk but I appreciate you might be on a tighter budget.

I brought new mattresses with all 3 of mine, just incase as paranoid about SIDS

We brought a new mattress for the Moses basket and cot for DS even though they were in good condition still and had only been used by DD for relatively short periods.

I had a similar mattress to dementedpixie and took one child out and pit the next child in, so it was in constant use and never in storage.

I think the concern is if it's been left in the loft or a cold spare room and damp might have got in to it.

We'll be getting new mattresses for crib, moses and cot due to the advice on SIDS.

Definitely reused between our own children (3) - totally different of its come from someone else, especially if you're not sure if there were smokers in the house or if a previous child had soiled it in any way but I know exactly what has happened to ours and am more than happy to reuse. I'd second the sunlight thing.
Of course if you are a worried person and would feel uncomfortable and worried about it then probably better for your peace of mind but there's no way I would personally.

What?! You think that SIDS researchers have falsified research that shows some correlation (not necessarily causation) with using second hand mattresses just to improve the profits of Mothercare and John Lewis?

We reused both cot and Moses basket mattresses between siblings.

If it's the super natural Little Green Sheep mattress that we had with our Snuzpod and you used the protector and it's been kept in a nice dry environment I'd definitely use it again (I'm certainly planning to if we have another).

Standard cot mattresses are a bit different I think, particularly chemically foam ones.

I'd get a new one.

New ones are cheap enough. For peace of mind I'd buy a new one.

I'll have a good look at the mattress and give the mattress protector a wash. Even though I was tempted to reuse it, I'll probably buy a new one for piece of mind.
