Travel insurance after 30 weeks?

Hi everyone,

Has anyone managed to find a company who will provide insurance which covers delivery beyond 28 weeks/2 months before delivery (the cut off seems to vary)? My husband and I had planned to travel abroad to a country with excellent health care facilities at 30 weeks, returning just before 32. I understand the risks of this and I also understand how uncomfortable the plane journey may be, don't need advice on this, we have our reasons for having to go. I also obviously wouldn't travel if I was anything other than low risk/green pathway still at that stage.

Does anyone have any bright ideas or pointers? Thank you!

We went on holiday while I was 32 weeks and found that quite a few of the main insurance companies would insure me until exactly 32 weeks which was no good for us! So we went through an insurance broker - it wasn't too much more. I'm not sure which broker it was (DH booked it) but we found it by googling travel insurance during pregnancy! Make sure they will actually cover you if you give birth - some we found would cover pregnancy related illness but not birth itself.

I didn't have any problems with the actual flying bit, it was more the queuing and standing around or ages which was uncomfortable. Go for it!

I might be misunderstanding the small print but my virgin one says it will cover a premature birth up until 8 weeks before expected due date which would be 32 weeks.

We also used an insurance broker to make sure we were covered for everything we needed. It was a fair bit more expensive than standard ones but worth it for the peace of mind (I had complications in my first pregnancy so that might have pushed the price up more for us)

We are going abroad when I will be around the same as you OP. We've got our travel insurance through Asda, who cover up to 32 weeks.

Thank you all for your brilliant suggestions, the Ravenhall one particularly looks great as wouldn't have to worry about cutting it fine to get back before 32 weeks. Any more ideas very welcome!

I also used the Ravenhall one, I researched it to death and that was the best I found. It covered normal childbirth abroad, a lot only covered complications from childbirth - look at the small print! They covered me at 35 weeks no issues.

The plane journey was fine (it was Ryanair so not luxurious!). You'll need a note from your GP which you'll probably have to pay for. Double check that the airline you book with allows you to fly in the 3rd trimester - most do now, but some don't.

I bought a few bits with me, but the insurance gives you £500 to spend if you have a baby abroad so I didn't worry about taking much.

Good things to know would be where the merest hospital is and also the nearest British embassy. You'll need it to get a passport for your baby if born abroad.
