Probably not the right place to post so if anybody could point me in the right direction or has advice?....

I've just found out we will be attending a wedding in July but we will be there for 5 days in the lakes, lots of walks etc which will not be suitable for a pram....baby will be around 6-8 weeks....any suggestions or advice for a good, cheapish sling?

At that age you might get away with a stretchy wrap type carrier (money wrap/cabboo close carrier etc), depending on the size of your baby. I would avoid cheap slings and buy second hand instead.

I would get a ring sling. If you are on Facebook, there are a few selling pages, or Lenny Lamb do nice ones for £45 or so. I used a ring sling almost exclusively for dd's first six months of life!

My Caboo has been absolutely fantastic- very comfortable and easy to put on and off. I think we paid about £50 new but it was worth every penny.

Thanks everyone, £50 is reasonable I just begrudge paying over £100 I think that's too much as I don't think it will get used an awful lot. Thanks will have a look at these ones at least I have a starting point now.

My 1st was 6lb 11oz but was forcep delivery and been advised that I will probably be started off early if this one is getting any bigger than my first.

A Moby wrap (which is what I assume the PP above suggested, but was thwarted by autocorrect) is quite easily the hottest sling known to man, and you'll be doing a lot of walking in July you say? Nooooo.

Ring slings are like Marmite - people love them or hate them.

Close Caboos are great but have a pretty short life - it'll last you til four months, max. A lot less if you have a big baby.

I would strongly recommend you get yourself to a sling library/sling meet in your area. You could hire something like a Close Caboo for as long as you need it, saving £££, or get the librarian to show you how to wear a newborn in a Connecta Solarweave (which will last you forever - still using it with my huge 17mo) or a light woven wrap like a Wrapsody Breeze. Both of these slings are ideal for warm weather - least chance of you/baby overheating.

I have a moby wrap and it is bloody boiling for me and my fairly large (well long!) 8 week old DS.

DS is a bit too big (and wriggly) for it now but it served us well for over a year. Easy to use, comfortable and so handy for day to day stuff!

I wear around Lancashire, and was back-carrying around Windermere just last month. Babywearing is a very sweaty business! The lighter you can go, the better (and I say this as an Australian who can cope with a bit more warmth than the average Pom )

I need to investigate good slings for my new addition coming in July. Placemarking!

Also check out Facebook sling selling groups - try Affordable Slings for BST. Everything is under £100 and you can pick up a second hand stretchy or Caboo for £20ish.

Baby wearers are a friendly and enabling bunch and you might well find people are happy to lend to you for the week for free.

I spent most of the summer (on the other side of the Pennines) in thick jumpers. Baby wearing for me is like my own personal radiator, which is a bonus

I agree that slings are pretty hot! Especially if you're also bf so doing the vest underneath clothes thing! I found with the Caboo that there's the main sling and then an outside wrap which i just didn't use when it was boiling. Yes to pp who said about hiring or second hand, my dd was a tiddler (9th centile) and she grew out of the caboo at around 5 months. Still worth every penny though. It's currently being borrowed by my heavily pregnant friend and if I don't have any more I'll sell it. It's the one thing that I didn't buy for ds, my first, but wish I had.

I had a wedding to go to when my DD was six weeks old. I went along to my local sling library and hired one from there. Cost 8 pounds for two weeks.

It was the manduca that we hired and was fairly cool considering it was the middle of July.

Just googled for sling libraries in my area and found one not so far and only £8 to hire one for a fortnight! I had never even heard of them so thank you to everyone! im still going to have a look around as I think if I have my own its something I will use a lot! Caboo sounds like the most popular!

Thanks that's the cheapest I have seen and suitable from birth!

I have bought a moby UV wrap. I can't comment yet on how warm it is to wear it but it does say that it is made of a special lighter weight fabric to keep you cooler and apparently there are now a few different moby wraps made in this fabric.

Slings are like bras - what works brilliantly for one person is torture on another. So even if you think you know what you want, it's worth hiring one from the sling library before buying, to check you get on with it.

Its partly body shape, partly baby shape, partly how cold / hot you run (I agree with the pp about living the small baby radiator effect ), partly what you're doing...

I had a Hana wrap which is made from bamboo fabric and I never got hot and sweaty despite wearing throughout a warm August.

The great thing about the sling library is that you can go along and try all sorts of slings out which will help you then purchase the right one for.you :)
