Struggling to find healthy snacks

So from about 3pm - 7pm today (including a 2 hour drive), I just ate chocolate. First a Wispa, then a Jaffa cake bar, then honeycomb pieces in the car and some Terry's choc segments. Not great and completely cancelled out the salad I had for lunch. What are your top tips for healthy snacks both at your desk and on the go? Everything I can think of e.g. apple slices, malt loaf etc.. has sugar in it! I usually have porridge and a banana in the morning.

Apple slices have a damn sight less sugar in than a wispa! I eat fruit, celery sticks, nuts and biscuits!

Pipestheghost · 12/11/2015 23:02

Brazil nuts and dried fruit

RoTo72 · 12/11/2015 23:06

I was doing slimming world when I found out I was pregnant. I would have smacked on fruit or cereal bars, (tho some.can be high sugar so watch out. Or if I wanted savoury I made egg muffins with peppers onions etc in batches and kept them on fridge. Also walkers.do low fat baked crisps for salty cravings. Or baton veg and dip.

A protein shake will work a treat, trust me! I have one a day (whey protein) and they fill me up for the morning or afternoon (depending when I have it) and I genuinely don't feel the need to snack again. Try the ready made 'upbeat' ones (very nice and about 100 cals) or make your own with whey protein, milk and a bit of cocoa and a teaspoon of sugar. I know that sounds like a rubbish replacement but it totally ticks the satisfaction box for your body - you'll be surprised!

Oatcakes or an apple spread with peanut butter
Greek yoghurt with berries
A small handful of nuts
Veg dunked in hoummous or guacamole

Sorry to disagree with lemon101 but protein shakes are not recommended in pregnancy unless you are specifically recommended them by your doctor. I looked into this a lot as I used them quite a bit before finding out I was pregnant.

shipperssss · 13/11/2015 08:20

Sorry forgot to add, it's more to do with what is added to the protein rather than the whey itself.

Redhead79 · 13/11/2015 09:34

I though protein shakes were out too, I think it's the casein(?) that's the problem, I was using them while weight training but stopped having them after I found out I was pregnant.
I'll second oatcakes and nut butters also rice cakes (I like the paprika and chilli ones) with cream cheese is good -I've even got DH on these
Other than that nuts and regular fruit (careful with dried as it has a lot of sugar). However having said all that I've defiantly had more than my fair share of crisps and cakes........

teamrigby · 13/11/2015 10:20

I was eating a lot of Carrot sticks, yoghurts, apples, bananas, little boxes of raisins as well as whole packs of Jaffa cakes! I've just discovered the banana Soreen lunchbox loaves too - yummy! :)

cloudjumper · 13/11/2015 12:45

Carrots, cherry tomatoes etc with hummus are great for snacking, even more so if you use reduced fat hummus. I second oatcakes, they are really filling, and can also recommend hard boiled eggs. Dried fruit, nuts etc.

teamrigby · 13/11/2015 12:59

ooo yes cloudjumper I completely forgot about hardboiled eggs :)

Love hard boiled eggs! And yes, must buy some Greek yoghurt. I just want to feel full instead of continuously snacking, but trying to avoid bread which makes my bump swell. Also, last time I was preg, eating carrots, tomatoes and hummus sparked heartburn.

Cheese on wholewheat crisp breads- easty to prepare in advance, or salmon and cucumber on crackers.

Hello! Depends which protein you drink. This is the one I use - nowt but whey m.myprotein.com/sports-nutrition/impact-whey-protein/10530943.html
Although I just got measured yesterday and am on the 90th centile (37 weeks) so you may also end up giving birth to Arnold Schwarzenegger....
