I've been anaemic for months now but have just been told my level is borderline requiring a transfusion and I've been given 2 weeks to increase my iron meds (and improve my blood results) or have iron transfusions.

Can anyone remember what their test result was at the time they had to have this? I needed them in my last pregnancy but can't remember what my results were - 9, I think, which they now call 90, but I can't be sure.

Thanks for any info :)

Hi Starfish, they gave me a blood transfusion after I lost blood during the delivery of my ds. My iron was 7 which they told me was way too low going home to mind a newborn. I felt SO much better after it.
Hope that helps

Mine was around 4 and I had an iron transfusion. Had to take iron tablets for months afterwards too, took ages to feel more normal.

Mine was 5.3 (lost 1.5l of blood) said the transition cut off was 7 so was definitely below it lol. I had two transfusions., then on liquid iron for a few months. Are you trying to improve your levels naturally as they are 9, plenty of red meant and green leafy vegetables? You will so much better when it's up higher

Mine was 2.3 and they did not transfuse me. But I didn't feel that bad (it had been dropping gradually over many years). Normally 7 is about the limit.

Thanks all so far. This is still during pregnancy, so not because I've lost blood giving birth (did have to have a blood transfusion last time).

Newlywed, I've been eating all of the right things but they've said it's dropping so fast and my ferritin's so low that I can't really hope to touch it through nutritional intake. I've been on iron supplements (Spatone) for months but still not absorbing it properly. I know I felt better after the iron transfusions last time, I'd just hoped I might be able to get through without them.

It sounds as though mine's still higher than most of yours were, so perhaps I won't need it :)

I was 32 weeks pregnant with my son (last year) and I was already in hospital as went into pre term labour which they stopped.
While in my resting heart rate was 140 and I felt awful.
My iron levels where around 7 and I had no iron stores.
So had to have a complete iron transfusion (took 6 hours).
Took 2 weeks to start feeling better but bloody hell I felt like a new person.
I'm 25 weeks and there keeping a closer watch on my iron.
