20 week scan couldn't check heart and spine.

Not sure if I need to be worried at all. Had 20 week check yesterday. All well apart from baby was too low down, under my c-section scar to check spine and heart. So I have to go back in 2 weeks. At the start the heart and spine could be seen clearly so I'm not sure why she couldn't do it or why I have to wait 2 weeks. Any ideas? I'm prone to worrying but hope I don't need to. Baby moving about and can feel him regularly.

Don't panic, I'm sure everything is fine :)
With DD1 she wouldn't behave and they couldn't check the heart either but I went back and it was perfectly normal.

I had to go back as they couldnt check all of spine first time round lazy baby who wouldn't move but doesn't stop now she's out

I believe it's quite a common situation. I viewed it as "get to see baby again"

Try not to worry (easier said than done I know) Flowers

I don't think you need to worry. I had the same at my 20 week scan with DS. Was sent to the cafe and told to have a strong coffee then come back but the little lazybones still hadn't moved, so I had to have another appointment. Think it was about a week later, I imagine just because that's when they next had a free slot.

Anyway the second attempt went fine and all was well. Try to just see it as a bonus scan and another chance to see the baby.

Also I think for the heart especially they have to get quite a detailed look at it to make sure it has formed correctly, so it might be that it was visible but just not in a good enough position to check exact measurements etc. Or the baby might have moved by the time the sonographer went back to perform the proper check. I really don't think you should be concerned at all.

Totally normal and nothing to worry about, at my 20 week he couldn't check a thing as she was so low and curled into a ball. I did jumping jacks and came back after a coffee but she still wouldn't budge. Had another 2 weeks later and they got all the measurements they needed. Happened with my first and second baby!

Thanks all. I feel very reassured now. Should have mentioned the sonograper was whispering to the nurse behind the curtain at this point which made me uneasy but I guess they could have been talking about anything!

I've got my 2nd 20 week scan tomorrow. As little one was on her tummy they couldn't see her face or the detail of the heart. I was told she was absolutely fine and nothing to worry about but they couldn't sign off the scan until they done the detail of heart and face.

They categorically told me it was nothing to worry about

At my 12 week the lady took the measurements on my nuchal fold (is that what it's called?) as soon as she put the thing on my tummy as she said that she probably wouldn't get the chance again later in the scan.
They probably have an order to check things in and just happens that had they have checked them in the beginning then all would have been fine. I wouldn't worry and like others have said its a good excuse to see bubs again.

This happened to me too. Baby turning somersaults and they were unable to scan heart, spine, bladder and kidneys. Returned at 23 weeks and luckily she played ball and all was well. Please don't worry they've sent you away when there's an issue with baby. If the sonographer was at all concerned you'd be back in within days not weeks.

scarednoob · 23/09/2015 15:37

I agree they wouldn't leave it 2 weeks if they thought there was a problem. I had to go back for a second 20 week scan as the baby flatly refused to turn over for the profile shot. Then when we did get it, I convinced myself i was having the only baby in the world to be born without a chin.....!

As the PP says, treat it as an extra chance to see the baby!

With mine, they could see heartbeat and overall view of the heart but she couldn't get a clear view of the chambers, so I had to go out and come back in three times! There was no concern, she just couldn't see it properly.

This happened with my lb - he just wouldn't get into the right position to check heart so had to go back the following week for another scan so I know how u feel with worrying while waiting but I'm sure it will all be fine!! I took it as an opportunity to take my mum along to repeat scan as partner was working so she got to experience seeing her gandson too which was special xx

She was probably whispering about fancying a tuna baguette for lunch....
