Which/how many toys for newborn?

First timer here, so possibly a stupid question...

We've been very fortunate in that relatives, etc. have bought us LOADS of clothes for baby and various other bits and bobs so we've not really wanted for anything (spoilt first grandchild/nephew syndrome! ), but I'm conscious that he only has a couple of toys. I want to get him some but I don't know a) if newborns really need toys or b) what sort of thing would be best. We have bought a kick and play piano gym thing, and he's got a bunny rattle and a couple of Lamaze toys (SO MUCH CRINKLE! I LOVE crinkle!!)...what sort of things should I be keeping an eye out for? Should I even bother at this early stage?

I wouldn't bother buying toys while you're pregnant. A play mat and some crinkly toys sound fine for now. When the baby is a bit older and able to hold things you could get rattles and things. I do like those spiral things that go over the handle of the car seat, I'm thinking about getting one, baby won't care but I like them!

Oh and things to chew on. Teething toys. But again it'll be months before baby can use them.

DS is 9 weeks and only just noticing his toys so you don't need to rush really. We have a thing that goes across the car seat which for the past couple of weeks he's liked to look at and now he bats.

This week I bought him a playmat which he LOVES and it's the only place I can leave him without him shouting for me.

His cuddly toys, rattles etc have been pointless so far as he can't grasp yet. Am looking forward to that!

From about 7 weeks, I used to pop DD in her play gym that has flashing lights and music and she would happily lie there staring. Six months later and she still loves it.

I wouldn't worry about getting any more toys than what you have already. They are really just lovely little pink lumps for the first few weeks. I do suggest getting one or two books that are suitable from birth. These will have black and white shapes and rudimentary faces which newborns love to look at.

I agree - they'll just eat, poo and sleep to start with and won't really interact with toys until later. A newborn cant even really see much! We got a few as gifts as well so I'd wait.
Sounds like you have it covered anyway, I found the mat/gym useful.

Oh and get yourself a bouncy chair. I say 'yourself' and not the baby as this is how you will do the things you take for granted now like showering and peeing

Sil put a little soft rabbit toy in the bag of goodies she gave me last week. That's about it for me. Not sure how much interest a newborn will have in toys tbh. Isn't all about eating, pooing and sleeping for the first few months? A good play may with some dangly things will be handy in a few months but otherwise I'm not bothering too much. I bet you can all feel the maternal instincts in me oozing onto the page....

BeautifulBatman I feel you re: maternal instincts (or lack thereof!) I don't know about you but as an 'older' mum to be I definitely have my more practical head on, rather than being all clucky and moony at the prospect of a baby!

Thanks for the advice. I'll leave it for now then. I had heard that the black and white books were good for very early days, plus I'd seen some ankle/wrist rattle things you can Velcro on which look like fun, but I'll leave it until after he's born. Will give me an excuse to get out of the house for a bit!

I'm 40 skeppers and my 1 and only dc is due on October. Maybe it is the older thing! :)

Everyone keeps saying 'ooh, how exciting' and I must come across as really negative (I don't mean to) because I then start running through a list of practicalities...it must sound like I don't want this baby sometimes, but I really do, I just know it's going to be hard work!

Lol. I'm looking forward to my very much wanted and planned baby. Can't wait. Just wish it would hurry up! Pregnancy does not suit me. Feeling it kick makes me squirm a bit. And I'll be gutted if it's ugly. But my hair has never looked better. Every cloud!

we had a Taf toys clip on pram book with dd that you can fold out around mose basket/ cot bit of pram. It's black and white and definitely seemed to keep dd happy from first days. lamaze toys were a bit hit too.

DD one paid no attention to toys for a while, she did however love her playmat - it had lights and music she would lie there for ages watching the lights flash

We got given quite a few Lamaze toys and vouchers after the baby was born so personally I would wait.

All my DS used for the first 3 months was his play gym mat & bouncy chair. But he didn't even reach up to hold or push the toys on those until the tale end of 3 months, he just tried to focus on them a bit.

He certainly didn't hold cuddly toys etc for months & months. Human contact and pulling faces/cooing are what tinies seem to really like, not much else floats their boat just yet.
