Do you really need a hat for newborn in this weather?

Thats it really... hospital back packed ready to go... haven't bothered with hat?

MW told me a hat wasn't needed in this weather indoors. Can't imagine it would be outdoors either?!

I think you'd need a sunhat for outdoors.

The midwife gave us one last week for our newborn. I think they like them to wear them for the first few hours to help them stabilise their temp and blood sugars. I think skin to skin is a suitable alternative.

We haven't worn a hat since we left hospital, but would wear a sun hat if we had one.

You don't need a hat at all. And you really don't need a sunhat because a newborn shouldn't be outside in full direct sun in the summer at all anyway!

Yes get a sun hat though. If your baby's in a sling over the summer she/he will need protection.

My dc were born in October and may and none of them wore a hat straight after birth.

Probably depends on hospital. Our hospital told us they keep temperature on wards low, and therefore the newborns need hats. But not when you get back home.

i dont think I've never put any of mine in a hat after birth. coming home, yes but not to just wear.

Certainly no hat indoors and a newborn should not be in direct sunlight ever for any reason. You keep them in the shade until they are moving themselves (crawling, escaping etc) and then you put sunscreen and a hat on them. Newborns only need hats in winter to keep their baldy heads warm.

If you end up with a c section you'll need one as the midwives like to put one on as it's cold in theatre. It doesn't take up any room so I'd just chuck one in the bag

My midwife shouted at me for putting a hat on my July born baby. It matched his outfit, but I was, of course, being ridiculous! My January born baby didn't even wear a hat!

Both my children are summer born ( in very hot weather) and were both given hats by mw in hospital. Dd was in a warming cot and ds was 3 weeks early so not sure if that made a difference though. Surely no harm in packing one, hardly going to take up much space.

I was in hdu after dd was born. Because it's so hot at the moment they had the windows open but then insisted she wear a hat because of the draught. Hope this helps!

My midwife said no need for a hat indoors, ever. Our baby was born in October and never wore a hat indoors. She said newborns can overheat quickly and they release excess heat from their heads (I think?!)
When DS was born they put a wooly hat on him immediately which is what they seem to do with all babies when they're born, but it came off after about half an hour.
We got to keep the hat - apparently they have a team of older ladies who knit and donate them for the newborns, which I thought was lovely

No need indoors. Our hospitals are bloody hot all year anyhow. Outdoors, they need shading from the sun. (unlike the poor pink all over little girl I saw, the other day)

Sorry I misunderstood and thought you were talking about sunhats. Bring a little newborn cloth one just in case its needed in the hosp or you get a randomly freezing day going home but take it off in the car and I suspect it will be boiling in the hospital anyway. You will not likely need it at all.

My eldest was born in the 2006 heatwave. She didn't wear it. The midwife was handed all of the clothes I'd packed by my DH and I was still be checked. They're tiny at least, not a huge space to use up.

Mine wore a little knitted hat supplied by the hospital for his first 12 hours or so.
In a recovery ward that was HOT not just warm but cloyingly boiling hot. I was sweating in a vest top.

We were told at antenatal class that they like baby to wear hat for 24 hours after birth, said if it's really hot they wouldn't bother but in normal weather they are needed

FTM here currently 37+2 with my rainbow baby boy forgive me if this is a silly question but trying to make sure I am prepared any haven't forgotten anything important! Do I need a woolly hat for my baby or cotton hats? I have cotton hats no woollen, I saw woollen on a check list the other day and a new born baby yesterday who had one on. A friend of mine forgot hats completely and hated the hospital ones her son had to wear, so I don't want to take the wrong thing! Thank you
