Spring chicken I took loads and loads of stuff for number 1 and never used most of it...after 3 I can distill my experience and I would say essential are a lot of the things mentioned (san pads, paper knicks, nappies etc) but also a nice easy book (can be long stretches of nothing going on in hospital); change for the phone; a nice camera if poss for good 1st pix (ours was stolen just before DS2 was born sniff); big bottle of somethign to drink - hospitals are hot, esp in June/July/Aug when you are due! and I was always really thirsty with feeding; yes whoever said that lots of jamas as you may well bleed and bleed. And do check out hosp equipment (birthing ball so fab). Also batteries for TENS if using; also birth announcement cards are a good idea to while away the hours; also apricots or prunes are a very good idea as most places do insist you pooh before they let you out! (things you mum never told you...). But do remember that even if you have a section and are in for days, DP/DH can fetch anything you run out of! HTH.

Also I forgot disinfectant wipes for loo seat etc, sorry for gory detail but materinity units can be very messy (no-one's fault); and don't do what I did first time and pick going home outfit for me of loose flowy summer DRESS that I had been wearign pre-birth...bit hard to feed in durr.
These lists have made me all nostalgic and full of memories, how silly is that!

Strange that no-one's mentioned muslins... used mine all the time, obviously when winding but loads of other uses too.
No Clary, you aren't silly, it's made me very nostalgic too! And good idea about the camera ? the first thing I remember after ds was born was all the flashes going off as dh and my sisters took endless pics!

while we're on the subject of biiiiiiiiig Asda pants (top idea) could any of the CS mums enlighten me as to how you wear pants/pads with a urinary catheter fitted? Also, if you're a wee bit immobile for a few hours do you just get your DH to change the pads?

I'm really sorry this is so graphic but I need to know what I'm letting myself in for
