Fancy a Spicy Italian Subway. Can I have it if I am 17 weeks pregnant? It has salami on it. Can I have Salami?

www.nhs.uk/conditions/pregnancy-and-baby/pages/foods-to-avoid-pregnant.aspx#cautious

It's says here that if the meat is pre-packed it is likely to be ok.

I would, but it's personal choice.Smile

Not wanting to be a party pooper, but salami is a cured meat and I think it's therefore on the "recommended to avoid" list for the toxoplasmosis risk. I think the reference to pre-packed meat is referring to things like ham, turkey etc.

happygojo · 29/05/2015 11:38

It's up to you. Everything in subway has been frozen, including the cold meats. The NHS website says that freezing kills parasites.

You could also ask for it to be toasted? the risk is pretty low but up to you at the end of the day.

Iloveonionchutney · 29/05/2015 13:30

I hope everything ok there, I spent the first two months surviving on kitsch more than subways lol! Mods with my first too, was always fine.

dillydollydarling · 29/05/2015 15:50

I thought that as long as the meats such as pepperoni and salami were cooked, it was safe to eat. So if you have it toasted I would say its okay.

I hope so anyway cos I work there and eat a sandwich for my lunch every day when I'm working! In fact I had a Spicy Italian today Grin

I looked this up as I was craving a foot long with cheese, salad and spicy southwestern sauce! came to the conclusion the salads, cheese slices and meats probably ok, but could not find anywhere whether the sauces have raw egg or not, so refused my craving.

goddammit, there's one on the ground floor of my hospital, and it smells AMAZING. all the fancy restaurants in Chelsea and that's the only thing I fancy for lunch when we go for scans!

sarkymare · 29/05/2015 16:41

Scared it shouldn't matter wether the Sauces are made with raw egg or not, the eggs have been vaccinated against salmonella in the UK and are therefore fine to eat.

Go and get yourself a sarny!

scarednoob · 29/05/2015 17:01

thanks sarky. the OH is NOT going to thank you when I insist on cramming that goodness down my throat at the next appointment instead of taking him to the fancy pub....!!

MissTwister · 29/05/2015 18:46

I'd wager no chain in the UK would use unpasteurised egg in their sauces!

I went to an 'artisan' burger restaurant the other day with 'house Mayo' on the menu. When I pushed on how they made the ' house mayo' it turned out Hellman's gave them a helping hand in a jar!

OhHolyFuck · 29/05/2015 18:51

I had a subway in labour! Likely to be fine I'll

Cheshirehello79 · 29/05/2015 20:57

My cravings in my first trimester for subway - chicken teriyaki I collected that many points ended up with couple free subs :-) say no more - I do love southwest sauce and it was confirmed that all their sauces uses pasteurised stuff and safe to eat if pregnant

MissMartin1992 · 29/05/2015 21:00

i had a craving sooo bad for an italian bmt! I've had 2 ft longs (seperate days heheGrin ) and im completely fine

abbiebunn · 29/05/2015 21:20

I ate these throughout my pregnancy, and haven't had any problems.

mumsrthebest · 02/06/2015 13:24

The advice I was given when pregnant about the nhs food list and the restrictions on meat and cheese was if you get it at a deli or farm shop then avoid but any mass produced stuff in supermarkets or eateries should be ok as it's unlikely to cause a problem

Cherryblossomsinspring · 02/06/2015 15:22

One of my favourite foods at the moment.

jurisane · 02/06/2015 15:26

Oh man...I've been eating so much Subway...the new Turkey Italiano--so good. I had one last night in fact.

The only thing I think you could worry about is listeria and I don't believe Subway has ever had an incident with it before. If in doubt just have them toast it. Everything in moderation right?!

ToastyFingers · 02/06/2015 15:56

I liked next door to a subway when I was pregnant with DD, wish I'd never moved :)
