If your first labour lasted 14 hours, how long did your second one last??

With ds1 I had a 14 hour labour from start to finish. managed at home for the first 9 hours, delivered him vaginally in hospital.

Now I am 30 weeks pregnant with Ds2. Am wondering if the labour is likely to be much quicker this time?

Any stories appreciated.

I am considering a home birth this time so hoping that it's all going to be done and dusted in 8-9 hours whilst ds1 is preferably asleep in bed!!

4 hours, both home births.

mayaknew · 17/05/2015 18:00

My first one lasted 12 hours from 4cm (I slept until then)

Second was 2 hours Shock

First labor 40 hours followed by emergency cs. 2nd one was 5 hours to a VBAC with only 20 min of pushing. I almost had her in London rush hour traffic.

Sorry you asked for stories.

DS1 was a large baby and so I was transferred to hospital for surgery. I still wanted another home birth though and ds2 was earlier and therefore a bit smaller, quicker and no pain relief. Ds1 woke up about two hours in (4am -8 am) so my mum came and took him to her house as he was only 2yo.

I've since had two more and all much quicker than my first! (Others two were 6 hours each, both at home again)

first 37 hours, 2nd about 3 from start to finish, actually quite enjoyed the experience.

WannabeLaraCroft · 17/05/2015 18:11

I'm praying my 2nd labour will be shorter - had pains on the Saturday morning, proper labour Saturday evening, didn't give birth til the Monday morning! Shock Shock

Lots of people say your 2nd is quicker, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed!!

Ds1 was an 18 hour labour from start to finish - he was a big un (as were the other 2) and took his time coming down.
Ds2, some 23 months later, was a total of 6 hours from the first contraction until he was born - the second stage of labour lasted just 2 minutes. I finished dilating at 6.24 and he was born at 6.26 - I didn't push at all in fact had my bloody legs crossed :)
Another 2 years later ds3 arrived after 3 hours but he was evicted.

targaryen · 17/05/2015 18:16

First 16 hours, second 3 hours (baby born 20 mins after arriving at hospital) third 1 hour (just made it to hospital)
Would be scared to have a fourth !

InQuiteAPickle · 17/05/2015 18:19

My first labour was about 35 hours.

My second was about 10 hours.

Allisgood1 · 17/05/2015 18:20

1st: nearly 14hrs (I think it was like 10)

2nd (induction): 12hrs from first contraction.

3rd: less than 2hrs from first contraction

InQuiteAPickle · 17/05/2015 18:22

I enjoyed my second labour. I'd love to see how long my third labour would be but we don't want a third child Grin.

Justusemyname · 17/05/2015 18:24

First - no labour as ecs.
Second - started 9.30pm, baby born 9.25pm after twenty minutes of pushing.
Third - started 9.30pm, baby born 10:15am after seven minutes of pushing.

RolyPolierThanThou · 17/05/2015 18:29

My first was 70hours (including induction for the final 26) my second was 7 hours from first tiny twinge to baby.

I asked mumsnet about this when i was expecting ds2 and it was near unanimous that second babies are quicker. The uterus is softer and baggier so baby can get into position more easily. only if the baby is in a bad starting position ( posterior) would you have it worse.

Very very few women had worse secon d labours, though its not unheard of. My second was brilliant and I enjoyed it. Felt totally swept up in the moment and my body took over the pushing. I was almost incidental to it all. My first was a horror show.

Im now on number three. I hear thirds can be a bit unpredictable.

BotBotticelli · 17/05/2015 18:58

Ah thank you all! That's all very reassuring!

Yes, I meant how long from the first contraction to when baby was born.

Rolypolier I heard that a lot when due my third and a lot of people said thirds can replicate the first labour.
My experience was that my third was even quicker.
My waters went at 9.20pm at home the day before my due date. I got to hospital at 9:40pm, got examined at 10pm, fully dilated, in the birth pool 10:10 and my daughter born 10:20!
If be worried if I was going to have a fourth how quick it would be.
I definitely think my body took over and completely knew what to do.

Mrscog · 17/05/2015 19:45

My first was about 11 hours. DS2 is 4 weeks tomorrow and although in retrospect I think labour was about 6 hours, I was only certain it was labour for the last 3, and I only got to the hospital with 30mins to spare as it was only the last hour that felt like the real deal.

First 14 hours
Second 45 mins - from first contraction. I too would be interested to see how a third labour would be, but two babies is enough!

InQuiteAPickle · 17/05/2015 20:43

Ah, first contraction to birth? 1st labour was about 66 hours then. 2 days of bastarding contractions to get to 4cms - I apparently wasn't in labour till then Angry.

2nd labour was still 10 hours though. Easy as pie compared to the first Smile.

InQuiteAPickle · 17/05/2015 20:44

I felt like Rachel from Friends when the Dr says that she's 3cms dilated and Ross goes "that's it? I've dilated 3!"

Christelle2207 · 18/05/2015 09:16

My first was about 40h. Currently 40+2 with no2 and praying for quicker!

Number3cometome · 18/05/2015 11:24

DC1 - 39+5 - 30 hours in hospital (can't remember how many at home)
Had an EMCS when fully dilated (long story)

DC2 - ELCS at 38 weeks, no labour

DC3 - hoping like crazy I don't go in to labour as booked for an ELCS at 39 weeks!

HaplessHousewife · 18/05/2015 11:32

I had my first contraction around 11pm-12am both times.

DC1 born 7.00pm
DC2 born 3.30pm

So not hugely quicker.

Cherryblossomsinspring · 18/05/2015 14:50

First was almost 2 days from waters breaking to delivery, a long hard slog. Second was about 3 hrs from the proper contractions to delivery.
