I am a known lush. They will definitely notice if I don't down a few glasses. What do I do?

Really don't want anyone to know about the pregnancy as it's such an early stage. If they guess they will say so as not discreet of nature.

Help!

Say you're on antibiotics or any drug you can't mix with alcohol. Or just pour a glass and take it with you into the kitchen to check on the food all the time. Can your other half cooperate and swap glasses?

Congratulations!

Stubbed · 15/05/2015 20:02

Say you are not feeling well. Act unwell. Don't pretend you are on antibiotics everyone will guess.

Goanddoapoothen · 15/05/2015 20:02

Tell them you are on metronidazole for tooth/kidney infection?! Definitely cannot drink whilst on that stuff. Or empty your glass and refill with schloer type drink?!

Saltedcaramel2014 · 15/05/2015 20:02

Another one for the glasses swapping! We did that lots. And congratulations x

Chchchchangeabout · 15/05/2015 20:05

Thanks for the congrats!

can say I'm ill but don't think they will believe antibiotics. Or that I wouldn't drink a bit anyway, if ill or on antibiotics.

I will look out for chances to make wine 'disappear' but they may be slim as we have a kitchen/diner where we'll all be sitting.

Thanks gor all the suggestions. Glass swapping may be a possibility... Will have to be v careful if don't want to be caught though.

I am a lush too, but wouldn't drink on metronidazole- it makes you puke. It's prescribed to keep people off the drink.

I was prescribed it for tooth infection, btw.

iwantgin · 15/05/2015 20:09

Can you keep topping up your champagne with sparkling water or lemonade so it looks like you have a fizzy drink at all times ?

Chchchchangeabout · 15/05/2015 20:22

That's interesting about the magic antibiotic. Will save that one up for the future. Won't get away with it tonight as would look v odd I hadn't said before.

Topping up also a good idea and will look for opportunities. Still tricky when all in same room though.

This old lush went into hiding! Glass swapping sounds good as does the metronidazole - you even need to give it 48hrs to get out of your system once you stop taking it! I gave it 24hrs and was so ill I couldn't go to work the next day Confused

RitaCrudgington · 15/05/2015 20:44

Nobody in the history of the world has ever believed a woman aged 25-40 who says she is on metronidazole unless they are actually the GP who prescribed her the antibiotic.

Cupoftchaiagain · 15/05/2015 20:45

If u take pour yourself a glass and visibly drink some of it then no one will ever notice that u aren't keeping up. Unless, that is, someone suggests shots (hanging with the wrong crowd ;) )

Alanna1 · 15/05/2015 20:45

I used sparkling cordial in your situation. Worked a treat.

Cupoftchaiagain · 15/05/2015 20:47

U could alternatively, say u have cystitis and the alcohol is making it worse, nobody wants to hear any more grisly details after that!

BarbieBrightSide · 15/05/2015 20:56

Put your glass to your lips a few times and take the smallest of sips. Take it with you to the kitchen etc.

I survived a week long work conference with no one but my manager knowing by sipping but passing on the refills, and because everyone else was getting drunk and I didn't actually refuse any alcohol no one noticed.

BarbieBrightSide · 15/05/2015 20:56

Oh, and congratulations!

Gumblossom · 15/05/2015 22:15

congratulations chchch! I think the anti-biotic one actually works a treat. I used it myself a week or so ago, when I'd just found out I was pregnant, was on a work junket with a friend/colleague and we had talked about getting on the wine running up to the conference. I told her I'd just been diagnosed the night before with a UTI and was on strong antibiotics. She accepted it easily, and I am also known for my love of bubbles.

Let us know how you get on. Smile

Gunpowder · 15/05/2015 22:17

Be seen to sip after a toast or two and then take your glass to the loo and pour away. Sad at the waste tho!

Stealthpolarbear · 15/05/2015 22:20

ou don't need to glass swap as such , after a small sip put yours down somewhere and prone dh to drink it after a little while. if he's challenged he just thought it was his

goodnessgraciousgouda · 16/05/2015 13:20

Well if you are a known lush, then just tell them that you have a massive, crippling hangover from the night before when you saw work friend/people they would have no idea about/people who you have completely invented, and you really can't bear drinking tonight.

newbian · 16/05/2015 13:30

I wouldn't buy antibiotics as an excuse for a second. Why would someone who was so sick that they were on antibiotics have me over to their house or go out for drinks?

When I was TTC I either:

  • said I was on a low-carb diet so not drinking
  • said I'd had a massive night out previously and couldn't handle a drink
  • sipped extremely slowly/pretended to sip and had DH cover for me

I had a friend who loves a drink come over and she went for soft drinks only. Knew that meant she was pregnant but didn't make a fuss. And I acted surprised when she announced a month or so later. If they're really your friends, they will probably suspect. Keep the excuses to the minimum.

Snowflake15 · 16/05/2015 14:54

Just bring the glass to your lips but don't drink it, and always be the one topping up everyone so they will assume you're doing yours too - I got through many work do's using this tactic and when I revealed at 20 weeks everyone was shocked, saying 'but you were drinking!?' Smile you'd be surprised how little people pay attention

NoArmaniNoPunani · 16/05/2015 15:17

Shloer is a good cover up for bubbly.

Jcee · 16/05/2015 15:27

As someone said upthread....cystitis

I pretended that was my problem and I had to lay off the booze or I'd end up with a kidney infection...kept that up for 4 months and no-one suspected despite me being a bit of a lush!

Ragwort · 16/05/2015 15:51

A few discreet sips or even a glass or two really isn't going to cause the baby any harm - the anti drinking in pregnancy 'advice' has just gone too far - it's aimed at people who regularly drink a bottle of vodka most nights. Grin.

I didn't even know I was pregnant for the first ten weeks and had been drinking 'normally' (for me) all that time 2-3 glasses of wine most nights.
